La Cucina "Sfiziosa" della Sophia Loren!

Beauty is the theme that runs through "Sophia Loren's Recipes & Memories." The beauty of Italy, whether it be Genoa or Naples, and the beauty of Ms. Loren, and her family, and friends, shine in this wonderful cookbook. It is a Latin custom to share food, recipes, memories, stories, and smiles when one is in la cucina. Ms. Loren is a very down-to-earth cook, and she invites you into her kitchen to share her recipes and memories. She wants to confide the "piccoli secreti" ("little secrets") of her table, her cooking, and her kitchen. She shows treasured photos and her famous zest for life; to her, "family is sacred."
These recipes are authentic. I have tested several of them and find them to be excellent. The recipes are minimalist and leave plenty of room for improvisation, so you can substitute seasonal fresh ingredients or add your own version of a dish to hers. Although this cookbook has meat and meatless recipes, I have found that many of the traditional meat-based recipes may be adapted for a vegetarian without much fuss. Most of the recipes have full-color pictures, with beautiful food styling.
Many of the recipes reflect Ms. Loren's Neapolitan heritage. She offers "Ragù alla Napoletana" (Neapolitan Stuffed Beef Rolls and Sauce), which is a classic meal for Sunday family dinners. The making of the ragù, or sauce, is a ritual in the Italian kitchen. For vegetarians, there are two wonderful recipes: "Spaghetti con Salsa al Pomodoro Semplice" (Spaghetti with Basic Tomato Sauce) and "Spaghetti con Pomodoro Crudo" (Spaghetti with Uncooked Tomato Sauce.)
This cookbook offers recipes and guidelines for preparing everything from Antipasti to Dolci. One can use this book to make an authentic Italian dinner, with all the courses, from start-to-finish. Here is one of my favorite meals for casual entertaining, with recipes taken from Ms. Loren's book: Antipasti ("Melone e Prosciutto" e "Bruschetta"); Zuppa ("Il Minestrone"); Il primo ("Linguine con Salsa Sophia"); Il secondo ("Agnello Bella Napoli"); Dolce ("Torte di Ricotta.")
While Ms. Loren's cookbook does favor Neapolitan specialities, such as pizza, baccalà, and tirami-sù, she also offers classic recipes from Rome, Genoa, and Sicily.
"La cucina sfiziosa" is "the whimsy kitchen." "Sfizioso, -a" is a colorful Neapolitan word that Ms. Loren defines on page 178 as ". . . that little extra touch that takes a dish beyond its traditional form and adds a hint of fancy, sparking the curiosity and satisfying the most difficult palate."

Finally-a cookbook that has it all !!!

The book is filled with loads of recipes for the novice as well as a seasoned cook. I am a vegetarian and I found many recipes that meet my requirements. There is a large variety of recipes, most of which you could serve to your family or to company. The pictures and info on Sophia over the years is a bonus. I recommend the book to anyone who enjoys Italian cuisinne

This book is wonderful. The photos alone are worth the money. I own a small restaurant / lounge called, Hunter's ROADHOUSE and on Fridays I like to run a special from a famous person or chef. I have made several from this book. I get rave reviews on Sophia's, Baked pasta, meat & tomatoes. I have not had one complaint on any of her recipes. My Father loved her and so do I. Thanks, Sophia and Thank You, Amazon.com for letting me express my feelings.

I followed the instructions in the book and within 8 hours I had two signs from my girl friend, who died 8 years ago.

That was now two months ago and I have done what he said to do everyday now and most of the time, I get very definite signs from the people I try to contact. However not always or maybe there are signs and I am just not recognizing them. For me this is the best book about how to contact people on the other side.

Becky Tarver Chase is an experienced English instructor who has taught all subject areas including reading, writing, grammar, communication skills, and test preparation. She has worked at universities and in private programs in the United States, Mexico, and Thailand. Her current focus is on creating effective language-learning materials, and she is one of the authors of the World English, Reading Explorer, Close-Up, and Pathways series from National Geographic Learning.

Kristin Johannsen held an MA in Applied English Linguistics from the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Don't buy a used book because we can't use.

I don't recommend nobody to buy a "used book" because each book has a code that we have to use to study on line. I bought a used book and I didn't know about this code, so I got this book but I can't use. Now, I have to buy another one.

great English textbook!

Great textbook, beautiful photography, full of rich cultural information. This textbook is fascinating even for a native English speaker to read. Each unit introduces the reader to tons of multicultural information, while at the same time leading students to discuss complex issues. The first one is about different gender roles around the world; energy efficiency and the preservation of species are brought out later. This textbook was just being released last fall, and lower levels were said to be scheduled for release in the spring of 2012.

Sanderson Delivers!

Sanderson is best known for writing HUGE fantasy novels. Brandon Sanderson is a born winner. It seems everything he tries his hand at is a home run! That is the case with this collection of shorts. I had already read every entry here with the exception of the new Stormlight Archive story Edgedancer. Stormlight is already my favorite series running right now. Will just say I have read the current books a couple of times. :)

Edgedancer is great. It runs 40 thousand words. It is about roughly 10 the length of one of the main novels. The main character of it is Lift, who you will have met in one of the interludes of Words of Radiance. Her story here serves many purposes. First and foremost, it is just a heck of a lot of fun. Next it expands on the world that this series takes place on. Last it is a good primer for book 3. Helping curb my appetite for Oathbringer along was worth the price of admission. If you liked Lift's awesomeness in WoR then rest assured this will not disappoint.

That isn't the only reason to buy this book. The other stories contained are incredible. My personal favorite is The Emporer's Soul. It is one of my favorite pieces of fiction of all time!

I'd be so happy! These stories are so interesting with complex characters ...

I wish I was in your position and hadn't already read most of these stories. If I could wipe my memory and read these stories fresh again, I'd be so happy! These stories are so interesting with complex characters and excellent settings. This would be a great way to introduce someone to Brandon's Cosmere universe for Christmas!

Rewards faithful readers with an even deeper understanding of Sanderson's creations

Weighing in at 672 pages, Brandon Sanderson's first short fiction collection not only pulls together various short stories and novellas from across his Cosmere, but organizes them by Shardworlds, complete with essays and illustrations on each. Arcanum Unbounded is a collection that would no doubt be daunting to a new reader, but which rewards the faithful with an even deeper understanding of his creations.

The collection opens with a pair of stories set in the world of Elantris, with “The Emperor's Soul” serving as a standalone tale, and “The Hope of Elantris” taking place following the original novel. Soul was the one story in the collection I had read before, and it was just as fascinating the second time around. As for Hope, it will have to wait until I read the source material, since it contains major spoilers.

Not surprisingly for his longest series to date, Mistborn gets three entries here. “The Eleventh Metal” was a pleasant surprise, being a prequel to the series with my favorite character, Kelsier. As odd as it was to see him so early in his career, it was also interesting to get some more insights into his tortured past. “Allomancer Jak and the Pits of Eltania, Episodes 28 through 30” was, by far, the most entertaining story in the collection. Written as a pulp adventure tale, what really makes it work is all the footnotes from the fictional editor who is forced to publish such nonsense. “Mistborn: Secret History” brings us back to Kelsier, following the events of the first Mistborn novel. It was an interesting story, with some entertaining moments, but I've never been a fan of stripping a character of his powers and taking him out of his element.

“White Sand" was a fascinating treat, offering up a sample of the graphic novel on which it's based (which is awesome all on its own), and then pairing it with the short story from which it originated. "Shadows for Silence in the Forests of Hell” is another standalone story set in its own world, and probably the darkest piece in the collection. It's a story of haunted forests, human cruelty, painful secrets, and the undying thirst for revenge. As far as the new material here is concerned, this was probably my favorite. Ironically, the next entry - “Sixth of Dusk” - was the only story that didn't work for me. I can't put my finger on what was wrong with it, but the story just never grabbed me.

The self-professed crown jewel of the collection, "Edgedancer," is an all-new Stormlight Archive novella that I am pleased to say was everything I was looking for. It's a great story that gives us a peek at another part of the world, and which looks at the magic of the world from a younger, less experienced perspective. It's a story that blends sorrow, awe, and humor in equal measure, revisiting the character of Lift, who first appeared in Words of Radiance.

Even if you've read some of the material before, the packaging of Arcanum Unbounded makes it a must read. Each section of the book has an illustration of the solar system in which it takes place, with the character of Khriss (who has written the Ars Arcanum at the end of each novel) providing a short essay on the world. Each story gets an illustration to introduce it, along with a Postscript from Sanderson, explaining how it fits into the Cosmere, why it's important, and how it came about. While it's not a good place to start for new readers, it's definitely a treat for fans.

About the Author

Patrick Moser is the editor of Pacific Passages: An Anthology of Surf Writing (University of Hawai'i Press, 2008). He collaborated with Shaun Tomson on Surfer's Code: 12 Simple Lessons for Riding through Life and has written articles for The Surfer's Journal and Surfer. He currently teaches writing and French language at Drury University in Springfield, Missouri where he also offers a course on the history and culture of surfing.

Shaun Tomson was named one of the twenty-five most influential surfers of the twentieth century, and one of the sixteen greatest surfers of all time. He has created two multimillion-dollar clothing brands―Instinct and Solitude. He was born in Durban, South Africa, and now makes his home in Montecito, California.

Author and psychiatrist M. Scott Peck once wrote..."life is difficult. This is a great truth, one of the greatest truths. It is a great truth because once we truly see this truth, we transcend it." This little book by surfing legend Shaun Tomson organizes an ethos for living a life of full spiritual citizenship through all of what life can require of us.

The tight, clean and illustrated hardbound volume is a compilation of riveting short stories each linking to one of Tomson's core values. The brief stories and values lead the reader through his life, including his rise to world champion, and his success and setbacks in the boardroom. His journey spans from teenage temptations to life threatening wipeouts in super-sized surf, and from rewarding victories to unimaginable personal loss.

Organized around a sort of kit to build one's own code, he provides any reader with the tools. While this is a GREAT book for any age, parents, teens and young adults could find value in its wisdom about many aspects of life, including; being true to ourselves, fear, perseverance, praying, imagining, creating and "making a difference". At 133 pages, this work is brief and very powerful.

He was born Shaun Tomson in Durban, South Africa. As a Jewish athlete, he was inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He learned to surf in the beachbreaks in and around Durban under the watchful eye of his father Ernie, and alongside older cousin Michael Tomson and brother Paul Tomson.

Shaun attended school in Durban - Clifton Preparatory, Carmel College and the University of Natal where he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree majoring in Business Finance. Shaun went on to dominate amateur surfing competition in South Africa and began venturing over to Hawaii in the late 60's, courtesy of a barmitzvah present from his father. It was on one of these trips that an awestruck 14 year old Tomson eyewitnessed the so-called "Biggest Wave Ever Ridden" by Californian Greg Noll at Makaha in 1969. Hawaii's surf proved to be a daunting challenge for Shaun, but he continued to mature and train in South Africa's hollow waves, such as Cave Rock, the Bay Of Plenty, and Jeffrey's Bay.

Shaun Tomson has been listed as one of the 25 most influential surfers of the century and as one of the 10 greatest surfers of all time. During his career he was both the youngest and oldest surfer to win a pro event and is considered to be one of the architects of professional surfing.

Surfing and the Free Ride generation

In 1975, Shaun was an integral part of the "Free Ride" generation. Along with Australians Rabbit Bartholomew, Mark Richards, Ian Cairns, Peter Townend and Mark Warren, they rode the infamous waves along Oahu's legendary North Shore with a style, aggression, and raw courage unseen prior to their arrival. Collectively, these surfers changed the face of surfing and were the first to really apply themselves as serious professional surfers. With his good looks, eloquence, and undeniable athleticism, Tomson served by default as the face and voice of this movement, and he is still viewed as the prototype blueprint for today's pro surfer, with legions of fans throughout the world. Tomson won the highly coveted IPS World Championship in 1977.

On a performance level, Tomson completely changed the way the tube section of the wave was ridden, using a unique style of pumping and weaving through and around collapsing sections of the barrel. Even today, his electrifying performances at Off The Wall and Backdoor Pipeline stand the test of time. A memorable quote of his from the period was Time is expanded inside the tube. A very underrated aspect of Tomson's inventiveness was his in the tube punch throughs where he escaped unscathed from hideous closeout sections over a shallow reef.
Shaun Tomson has appeared in many films including Free Ride, Fantasea, Many Classic Moments, and In God’s Hands. Tomson also co-produced an award winning full length feature film about the benchmark mid-70's surfing era called, "Bustin' Down The Door" which premiered in early 2008. He also wrote and narrated a documentary about Jeffreys Bay called "A Pure Line."
Tomson is a board member and ambassador for Surfrider Foundation, the world’s largest environmental group dedicated to protecting the world’s oceans, waves and beaches. In 1984 he was the first professional surfer to become a member of the foundation and was Chairman of the Advisory board. In 2002 he received the Surf Industry Manufacturer Association Environmentalist of the Year Award for his environmental efforts.

Perfect for all ages!

World Champion surfer Shaun Tomson (Surfer's Code - 12 Simple Lessons for Riding Through Life) brings us his latest guidebook to life. This time his writing is based on the many talks he has personally given to schools. In the mid-70s, Tomson had the movie star looks and the talent to dominate the surf contests and magazines, and his company Instinct, was a lucrative business in the early 80s. But his life has not always been so easy.

He reveals to us his grit and determination to become a professional surfer, his lack of self esteem when 9/11 affected his business, and the grief he felt following the loss of his teenage son. It is these many personal experiences, that draw us in and give real weight to his lessons. Chapters include the following titles: "I will be myself," "I will dream," "I will face my fears," and more. This book is wonderfully written and illustrated with color photographs. Ideal for teenagers and a great read for adults, too. Highly recommended.

John Wilmerding is a Sarofim Professor of American Art, emeritus, at Princeton University. Formerly, he was a visiting curator in the department of American art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and has served as senior curator and deputy director of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. He is currently chairman of the board of trustees of the National Gallery and a trustee of the Guggenheim Museum and the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art.

If you have a sweet tooth

This book is the catalog for the current Thiebaud exhibition held at the Acquavella Gallery on 79th street in NYC, Acquavella being Thiebaud's dealer since 2012. The book is richly illustrated and the reproductions are of a better quality than in the Whitney 2000 catalog, even though there are fewer works in the show. The main asset of this publication is to show numerous works owned by the artist and his family, which, by definition, are seldom reproduced. Given the dearth of notable books on Thiebaud, this one is the best available option in my opinion.

Our American Treasure

If you are a Thiebaud fan like I am, you will enjoy this collection of familar images as well as some lesser known works from the past. I particularly find his recent landscapes intriguing, as some of those were also included. Thiebaud is such a national treasure, and has been for six-plus decades. Now in his nineties, he begins his workday at six AM continuing to add to his already impressive legacy. IMHO he is the greatest living American artist, and so many painters (myself included), steal all that we can comprehend from his paintings. You won't be disappointed.

In this folkloric examination of mass-produced material culture in the United States, Jeannie Banks Thomas examines the gendered sculptural forms that are among the most visible, including Barbie, Ken, and G.I. Joe dolls; yard figures (gnomes, geese, and flamingos); and cemetery statuary (angels, sports-related images, figures of the Virgin Mary, soldiers, and politicians). Images of females are often emphasized or sexualized, frequently through nudity or partial nudity, whereas those of the male body are not only clothed but also armored in the trappings of action and aggression. Thomas locates these various objects of folk art within a discussion of the post-women's movement discourse on gender. In addition to the items themselves, Thomas explores the stories and behaviors they generate, including legends of the supernatural about cemetery statues, oral narratives of yard artists and accounts of pranks involving yard art, narratives about children's play with Barbie, Ken, and G.I. Joe, and the electronic folklore (or e-lore) about Barbie that circulates on the Internet.
