Great text! recommend for all surgeons

I first read Dr. Schein's writing on his great personal website. I bought this book and have been super happy with it.
THe item description fails to show how nice the binding is, and what a weighty substantial book this is. The layout is very attractive, and the quotes range from the bible to Rudyard Kipling.
This is a great book and belongs in the library of any surgeon.
If you already own it, buy another- It makes an excellent, thoughtful gift for a surgeon!
My only gripe is that Dr. Schein has not released an electronic/ Kindle version yet.

The Oral Tradition of Surgical Wisdom

Every surgeon-in-training has had a few "pearls" engraved in his mind during his formative years, acquired not in the dutiful study of textbooks and journals, but in the frontlines -- the OR, the bedside rounds, the hectic ER consults and the dreaded M&M conferences to name a few. Those may be wry obsaervations on the nature of medical practice, or valuable teachings given an ingenous phrasing.
This book is, in a way, a celebration of this rich "oral tradition" cultivated by surgeons; a collection of quotes, from Hippocrates and Sushruta, to Oliver Sacks and Ira Rutkow. Some quotes remain relevant after thousands of years; others, mere decades old, strike one as hopelessly outdated -- offering valuable perspective on the fleeting nature of truth, even under the aegis of Medicine and Science.
Some are witty and entertaining; others are deeply thoughtful, and even melancholy. All offer the reader a glimpse into the hearts and minds of surgeons, past and present.
Dr. Schein himself, both a gifted writer and an eminently pragmatical surgical educator, intersperses his own thoughts at the end of each chapter. Those, too, go from valuable, hard-earned teachings ("The most important clotting factor is the surgeon") to wry observations ("A 'real' surgeon shouts at his superiors, never at those below him").
This book will appeal mostly to surgeons of all stripes, from interns to department chairs, and to those who work with surgical patients on a regular basis. I highly recommend it.
