However, Macdonald does go into more specific detail about women's status and occupations than the other books. Jeanette Roycraft got her start in art in elementary school, when she was drawing horses in class instead of doing class work. After taking art classes later in school, Jeanette went on to work in various careers, including education, manufacturing, and law enforcement before returning to her first loves—writing and design. Ms. Roycraft has had numerous books published under the pen name Jaye Roycraft and also has worked as a publisher’s assistant and copyeditor. Ms. Roycraft is the daughter of Roland Roycraft, an internationally-renowned award-winning watercolor artist, who has always been her inspiration.

Expected Much More from a book touted for horse lovers! Way too much 'artistic' squiggling. Geared towards those who want to fill in a bunch of tiny spaces with color. Some pictures don't even fill the page. Not happy with non-horse abstracts plus duplicate pictures. Save your money and get one of the Dover horse coloring books. I've printed better coloring pages off the Web for FREE.

Good Intermediate level book

I have the first volume and I liked so I ordered the second volume. Lots of puzzles that are challenging. This is a great puzzle book for those looking for intermediate level puzzles. By intermediate I mean puzzles that dont give you a clue, like clue you in on what to look for Mate in 3, find the pin, find the fork etc... So if you already have an understanding of basic tactical motifs you will like this book. If you are just starting off and dont have a grasp of basic tactics then you may not like this book at this stage. What is really apealling about the puzzles is that you are not always going to get a mate or go up a big piece. Many of the puzzles involve creating a threat and going up a pawn and a few puzzles you need to recognize the position is lost and go for a draw. And in real play you will find one pawn can be the difference between a win and a loss. When I was first working out the problems I was thinking They were using the same puzzles as the previous book, but I did not find a duplicate and realize that its my pattern recognition that has improved. The puzzles are from real games and if you are a clubhouse/coffee shop player your going to see these motifs appear a lot. It is an excellent book, lots of puzzles and great practice. like the first volume, this is a nice book.

A great way to study chess!

I have Palliser's 'The Complete Chess Workout' and I enjoyed it, so when this second volume came out, I knew that I needed it buy it as well and to buy a second copy for a friend of mine.

I often do not the time to sit down and play out the moves in a game, so I find puzzle books like these to be ideal for momentary diversions from my daily tasks.

The definition of La Douleur Exquise is the heart wrenching pain of wanting someone you can't have, and this book from J.R. Rogue lives up to its title. The poems contained within the pages are heart wrenching, and soul consuming. They are real, and I felt all of the heart ache that Rogue pulled from the depths of her soul.I tried to pick a piece from the book that I could choose as a favorite, but the fact is that I found myself identifying with everything. Beautifully heartbreaking words! For anyone who has experienced unrequited love or who has had their heart shattered by love This is for anyone who loves poetry, or even if you've never read a single poem in your life. It's (currently)set as a great price for kindle, so get it now!

I discovered her because one of my favorite authors posted some of her work on Instagram. I immediately fell in love with the sadness in her words and was looking for more of her work. I was so excited when I found out she was releasing a collection of her work and immediately pre-ordered this. This surpassed all of my expectations! I can't describe the emotional puddle I become every time I read this.

“I think I can feel it
most days
in the in-between;
you spell my name in strange
ways- b l a m e.”

You can feel Jen’s pain through her tragic words. It's amazing how intimate poetry can be, it feels like she gave us a huge part of herself. Her words read like a classic already. She is easily my new favorite poet of our time!!!

"For every lover who has tasted the unrequited kind, too many times."

Before I even began reading the poems, from just this line, I knew this would be a great read. I connected instantaneously and the poems that followed surely didn't disappoint. J.R. Rogue writes in such a raw, honest way - it's beautiful.

It reads like a journey, rather than a random string of poems. It's very cathartic, I was completely unable put it down - at the beginning, I related so strongly to that heartache, but by the end I wanted to feel that same release felt in the last poem. I love that it's honest, I love that it doesn't sugarcoat love as something that is always beautiful and perfect, but simultaneously still offers the hope that things will improve and we can stitch ourselves up and continue on. Highly recommend.

Emotive poetry for those who love and have once loved

I'm a lover of the poetry J.R. Rogue shares for free on Instagram. I wanted to support and thank her for sharing her emotive words with us and purchasing this collection with the lovely, illustrated cover was definitely the way to go.

I thought I was going to read only a couple poems a day (ya know, spread them out a bit) but then I finished it in a day. No regrets lol. Although I will be returning to this collection again after I experience a heartbreak like these.

About the Author
Born in Edinburgh in 1906, the son of the city's Director of Education, John Innes Mackintosh Stewart wrote a highly successful series of mystery stories under the pseudonym Michael Innes. Innes was educated at Oriel College, Oxford, where he was presented with the Matthew Arnold Memorial Prize and named a Bishop Frazer's scholar. After graduation he went to Vienna, to study Freudian psychoanalysis for a year and following his first book, an edition of Florio's translation of Montaigne, was offered a lectureship at the University of Leeds. In 1932 he married Margaret Hardwick, a doctor, and they subsequently had five children including Angus, also a novelist. The year 1936 saw Innes as Professor of English at the University of Adelaide, during which tenure he wrote his first mystery story, 'Death at the President's Lodging'. With his second, 'Hamlet Revenge', Innes firmly established his reputation as a highly entertaining and cultivated writer. After the end of World War II, Innes returned to the UK and spent two years at Queen's University, Belfast where in 1949 he wrote the 'Journeying Boy', a novel notable for the richly comedic use of an Irish setting. He then settled down as a Reader in English Literature at Christ Church, Oxford, from which he retired in 1973. His most famous character is 'John Appleby', who inspired a penchant for donnish detective fiction that lasts to this day. Innes's other well-known character is 'Honeybath', the painter and rather reluctant detective, who first appeared in 1975 in 'The Mysterious Commission'. The last novel, 'Appleby and the Ospreys', was published in 1986, some eight years before his death in 1994. 'A master - he constructs a plot that twists and turns like an electric eel: it gives you shock upon shock and you cannot let go.' - Times Literary Supplement.

I really enjoyed this book. Michael Innes plays with words throughout this enjoyable mystery. I couldn't put it down. If you enjoy British mysteries, I highly recommend this one.

More farce than bloodshed

Sir John Appleby, lately retired from Scotland Yard is tapped to give a speech at a mystery writers' dinner club in London, the 'Diner Dupin,' at which he is briefly introduced to Priscilla Pringle, author of such titles as "Poison at the Parsonage" and "Revenge at the Rectory." Miss Pringle's friend, a romance author attempts to get Priscilla to tell Sir John of a disturbing incident on the train into London, but Miss Pringle shies off. Appleby is left with only a confused memory of the meeting:

"'The magenta one was anxious that the salmon-pink one should tell me some interesting anecdote.' Appleby just perceptibly hesitated. 'There was to be a railway journey in it, and a retired soldier. But the salmon-pink one rather shut the other one up.'"

Little does Appleby know that he will encounter Miss Pringle and her mysterious retired soldier, deep in darkest Wiltshire, in a case involving blackmail, various unsavoury goings-on, and possibly even murder.

All of Michael Innes' Appleby mysteries abound with eccentric (although highly literate) characters and some of the novels, such as "Appleby's Answer" tend more toward farce than bloodshed. This author takes stock characters from the British mystery genre and twists them just a bit out of true: the horse-crazy country gentry; the genteel, middle-aged authoress of shocking mysteries; and a couple of British school boys, who could have been plucked from "Lord of the Flies."

Appleby's long-suffering wife, Judith makes fun of her husband's propensity to involve himself in the criminal affairs of mere acquaintances:

"'John's answers to such problems are invariably correct. It was a saying, as a matter of fact, at Scotland Yard.' Outrageous invention was occasionally one of Judith's amusements. '"Appleby's Answer," they used to say. It became proverbial.'"

Michael Innes (John Innes Mackintosh Stewart) was born in Edinburgh, educated at Oxford, and taught English in universities all over the world. His scholarly career includes works on Rudyard Kipling and Joseph Conrad, but he is better known as the creator of Inspector John Appleby, whose exploits inspired a lasting vogue for literary (and literate) mysteries.

Very well written... It transports you to a way of life and a culture unknown to the average American.
When you read Reyna's descriptions of where she grew up, and the conditions, it is perfectly understood why so many human beings want to go to 'El otro lado' where everything is perceived as a bed of roses...
With hard work, commitment, and tenacity anyone can achieve the 'American Dream', as Reyna has...
I am an immigrant from Latin America, who came to this country to teach and was never exposed to the conditions Reyna grew up in; however I share the same values in regard to family and commitment to family . My reasons for coming to the USA were completely different and was never undocumented...
I could not put the book down (well, my iPad with the Kindle App) after I started reading it!

This book changed everything: the way I see my mother and her struggles, the way being left along can affect a young person, and overall the aspect of overcoming a struggle. Reyna Grande is extremely vivd and gives specific detail as to her life in this book. Every single chapter I read felt like I was there; I was in the same spot as her (which at some points I have been). It's given me the chance to truly open my eyes, because unlike her, I have the title of American on my name, and that title gives me so much privilege. I can go on and on as to why evert single school in California should read this. congress men/women should read this to understand what immigrants really go through. This book has also inspired me to keep on reading more and more, as well as continue my higher education.

reading this book was like looking into her soul

I live in New Mexico. i seen the flight of Mexican immigrants for years. reading this book was like looking into her soul. I felt a sadness just knowing the life she had to endure and how she was put down at a young age simply because her parents were in the states. it was sad,and she and her siblings were strong and stood by each other with courage and conviction, I highly recommend this to all. it's an amazingly true and honest memoir. I truly believe we as a nation are missing out on an opportunity to legally bring these immigrants to the states to work and earn an honest living. Way to go Reyna your book was Awesome. I can't wait to hear you speak and I hope to meet you at San Juan college on the 29th of September.

About the Author
David M. Newman earned his B.A. from San Diego State University in 1981 and his graduate degrees from the University of Washington in Seattle (M.A. 1984, PhD 1988). After a year at the University of Connecticut, David went to DePauw University in 1989 and has been there ever since. David teaches courses in Contemporary Society, Deviance, Mental Illness, Family, Social Psychology, and Research Methods. He has published numerous articles on teaching and has presented research papers on the intersection of gender and power in intimate relationships. Recently most of his scholarly activity has been devoted to writing and revising several books, including Sociology: Exploring the Architecture of Everyday Life (SAGE, 2014); Identities and Inequalities: Exploring the Intersections of Race, Class, Gender, and Sexuality (McGraw-Hill, 2012); and Families: A Sociological Perspective (McGraw-Hill, 2009). He is currently working on a book-length manuscript that examines the cultural meaning, institutional importance, and social limitations of “second chance” narratives in everyday life.
