Simmel on Culture

This review might sound a bit strange to many readers as it comes from an unlikely field, namely the study of management.

This book has been an eye-opener for me. Simmel's insightful thought, expressed in beautifully poetic language, has contributed directly to the development of organisational life-cycle theories, and especially that of I. Adizes. His way of looking at cultural development in terms of content versus form, of structure versus flexibility, of life energy versus constraints, as well as his categorisation of individual characters have proved very fertile when transplanted in the field of management. It is a pity that this debt has not been acknowledged more openly.

A monument to love and courage

Great art, or for that matter any other line of work, is created out of love, it would appear. So it is with this great little book of letters composed by the actress Natascha McElhone in her first year after the sudden and wholly unexpected death of 42 year-old husband, plastic surgeon Martin Kelly. Her grief's unadulterated rawness and her searing emotional honesty make reading this 110-page volume nothing short of a tour de force, and we can only speculate about the emotionally wrenching experience, however therapeutic, of writing it, and her brave decision ultimately to publish it. The very fact of this book's publication renders it a work of love directed not just to the husband and father who never these letters shall read, or their three sons who one day, no doubt, will do so filled with immense pride, but readers at large, privileged to vicariously accompany Natascha for the especially turbulent first twelve months of the emotional rollercoaster that constitutes life after Martin (lest my referring to them here by their first names seems overly familiar, any pretense to detachment or formality by the end of the ride seems the greater inappropriateness). Collectively we can consider ourselves fortunate that Natascha came down on this side of the proverbial fence she makes clear she was on at one point about publishing her letters.

I did actually know Martin, in my days training to be a plastic surgeon at Charing Cross Hospital in London, as a smart, personable, subtly funny, driven and enviably talented colleague, and once met Natascha, briefly, at the hospital's 1997 Christmas party. I last spoke with Martin in 2008, when I inadvertently interrupted his out-patient clinic at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital by calling him from Manhattan, where I then lived, for advice, which he graciously gave, on a friend's baby born in London with a facial deformity.

Martin and Natascha's motto was: "Work hard. Expect nothing. Celebrate." Her book expresses it perfectly. The mere fact and tragic circumstances of Martin's death notwithstanding, Natascha never, at least not in these pages, wallows in self-pity, and owing to her evidently irrepressible, whimsical and self-deprecating sense of humor I found myself more often smiling than her book's unfathomably sad subject matter brought tears to my eyes (though there was plenty of that). Far from the diva one might count on her to be, or the glamorous 'OK Magazine' lifestyle of otherwise untroubled privilege she might be expected to lead, Natascha comes across as vulnerable and unedited, all the more lovable for her unguardedly, bravely and generously shared insecurities and neuroses (in contrast, Martin - after all the object of this oeuvre - remains subtly less approachable to us, perhaps because through Natascha's lens he appears too close to perfect).

Natascha's description of the experience of grief from her children's perspective is impossible to remain unaffected by. One particularly moving passage, indicative I suppose of this cyberage of ours, is the incident she recounts, close to the anniversary of Martin's death, of Theo prompting her to vainly click on Martin's Skype username to see what would happen.

It comes as no surprise to read on Amazon's UK site and elsewhere that Natascha's book is helping bereaved readers in their grief. But this isn't a book just for widows and widowers - I would recommend it also to wives and husbands. A marriage therapist friend of mine once revealed to me that she mourns her husband daily to appreciate what she has. And husbands and fathers may gain a glimpse of how their loved ones might remember them in death, and thus be reminded of what matters in life. As profoundly and completely as Natascha experienced being loved by Martin, it is the palpable intensity of her love for him, and so articulately expressed acute grief over her loss, that surely make him the envy of every man alive. What better memorial?

Completely Real

Amazing book, amazing writer, amazing woman.

It's a completely raw & real book, and one can really feel her pain and heartache at the loss of her husband.

I've always been drawn to her as a woman watching the show Californication cause she seemed very real, and this book only confirms my assumption.

I bought this because I am a fan of Natascha Mcelhone and wanted to see how she was as a writer. What I found was a requiem of passage ~ the integration of grief and celebration over her husband's life and passing. It was honest, gritty, gut wrenching, and engaging.

excellent book!!

I was very excited when I received this book. I was delivered in a timely manner I was not expecting it to come soon. The pictures are very vivid and labeled accurately. This is a perfect book if you want to have a good command of the anatomy and is very relevant for practicing technologist. My only suggestion is that should be available in electronic form which would make it easy to carry around and convenient reference. I highly recommend this book.

Great Book, Free Shipping but it took forever to get here.

The book is great, BUT..... Ordered it July 10th and it did not ship until July 28th. It was free shipping and was stated to be delivered between July 17th and Aug 1st. I am just glad I didn't need this book I just wanted it. If it would have been for a class that is a different story, I might suggest looking around for faster service.

An extremely valuable resource

I don't normally write reviews for products I buy but I thought that I would put in my two cents about the book Basicsynth. I started studying the beginnings of digital signal processing (DSP) because I was fascinated with the idea of constructing a software instrument, yet every book on DSP was either a lot of technical jargon or made you say "Okay, so how do I use this practically?" Similarly, those of us who aren't the best at translating real life equations into code will find most books on programming to be equally unhelpful. This book is that intermediary that bridges the gap between digital signal processing and computer programming, and it does a fine job of it.

I have not used the book to its full potential, since I'm still a novice with both the equations and concepts of actual DSP as well as programming. However it has helped tremendously to understand some of the basic concepts of DSP without unnecessary jargon as well as given me a clearer look into how a computer program actually represents some of the seemingly complex equations.

The later chapters can get extremely complex in subject, but keep in mind this book is not meant as a replacement for DSP books, but rather a supplement. For a good place to start I recommend Richard G. Lyons "Understanding Digital Signal Processing".

One of the really great aspects of the book is that the code is presented in a very clear fashion such that it is easy to identify what the functions in the excerpts are doing. Not only that but frequently Mitchell provides example code that is a literal representation of the equation, followed often by multiple versions of that same code in some simplified fashion. This can either be code that is more computationally efficient or other times it's just presented in a way that's easier to read and understand for the would-be programmer. Since programs are not always written with diligent attention to useful comments and formatting, browsing existing code may not be that helpful.

As the other review by Dan Mitchell explains, the book covers many topics including the most common forms of computer generated sound, including FM, subtractive and additive synthesis, as well as filters and common processors like reverb and chorus. There are numerous other topics in the book that are definitely worth your while if the subject matter interests you.

My solitary complaint about the book is that it is currently only fully available in print format. While there is nothing inherently wrong with that, for a field that is as fast moving as programming software instruments and effects, it is helpful to be able to update code and concepts if necessary. In defense of the book however, most changes in C++ are minor at this point and unlikely to affect the content of the book and second the subjects the book covers are well-trodden and "old" enough that new innovations in the field will also have little or no effect on what are tried and true methods of sound synthesis.

All in all a fantastic book and make sure to get the example code at [...] when working with the book.

Unless you love reading about equations pertaining to synth I wouldn't recommend this book. The author zeros in on the math that makes up parts of a synth and includes some code, but its the dryest presentation ever. Also there is no big picture discussion on how to try in the parts. Don't buy this book

Good Introduction - Please remove the optimizations hints ;)

Pretty much what the others already said...

Since I am a system software developer trying to understand how instruments can be synthesized, I had no previous exposure, even though very advanced algorithms, math and physics understanding. This book will tell a software developer anything he needs to know ;), so it doesn't throw you in cold water. But beaware that it will only go through the basics. I read through it in a few hours and mostly its a lot of templates to generate various stuffs and mix it together. Its good to have such a bird-view feeling over topic. After that I would suggest what I am doing now, reading "Designing Sound, by Andy Farnell" which goes into the great detail of how the physics work behind the scenes and how to simulate it.

BUT, I am a bit annoyed by the outdated optimzation hints. Especially in 2008... If that was a book from 2000 OKAY! But its not.
Your compiler, especially a C++ compiler knows all the tricks. You don't need to pull out loop invariants, you don't need to do some bit-shifting ( x*=2 will actually be done as x

Kuby Immunology: The bible of Immunology

I have six of the seven editions of the Kuby Immunology. It remains the best text book for budding immunologists for both undergrad and graduate level. It is especially useful for those of us working immunologists that find it difficult to keep pace with how rapidly our science is expanding in our level of understanding immunity. With advancements in molecular biology, we are constantly needing to review how we understand the immune system. Kuby is no longer just for undergrads. It also caters nicely for graduates and post-grads as well as it brings in the latest knowledge of immunology in a concise accessible manner for those of us applied immunologists.

Nice Update to a Classic Text

This is still a great textbook.

I used a much earlier edition of this text as an undergrad and it really helped me understand the basic science behind the complexities of the immune system. The 7th edition substantially changes the approach but it is still written by people that teach undergrad immunology and understand the concerns of students just beginning to learn this complex subject matter.

This edition adds much to the older version that I learned used doing especially well with the introduction of the microbiome and new regulatory cell types and tolerance.

A very well organized and highly informative book on immunology

Although a highly detailed book and the information is challenging for the memory, this book is written in a very comprehensible way and has all that a resident/specialist needs to know about immunology. Too much complicated for medical students or USMLE exams!

It's not everyday that I come across a Burmese/English dictionary, so when I found this one, I had to have it. It does its job for the most part, but I think that some of the spellings for the pronunciations could be improved.
