Best EEG Atlas

There are a few EEG "atlas" books out there but I have to say I have always found this particular atlas to be the most informative. This book very clearly lays out various normal and abnormal EEG patterns with multiple screen shots for each and give specifics on how to differentiate those patterns from similar patters. This books is probably overshadowed by larger books with shiny color pages and DVD reviews, but none of them have as much relevant content in such a concise and tidy of a package. I am very much looking forward to the new edition coming march 2013.

Pretty pictures, but not good for trip planning

When we got this book last Spring, my wife & I already had a trip planned to Mexico. We were going to spend a few days on Isla Holbox (she wanted to swim with the whalesharks) but we had no plans for the second half of our week. Along comes this book with a description of a lovely dive resort on the Yucatan, so we booked it. It was a very nice place, but the dive shop had changed hands and was completely different from what the book describes; we were greatly disappointed. In fact, we ended up renting a car and driving to another dive shop and did our diving there.

Bottom line, there are some beautiful pictures, and the book might offer some ideas on places to explore, but be aware that it is impossible for the author to keep all of the details current.

About the Author
Janet Bloch earned a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1980. After her graduation she had no idea how to approach galleries or write grants. Then, as the director of Chicago's Woman Made Gallery she experienced the art world from the 'gallery side.' Her perceptions led to practices that advanced her own art career, such as solo shows and earned her such awards as an Illinois Arts Council Fellowship, a National Endowment of the Arts Regional/Midwest Fellowship and two Individual Artist's Grants from the Indiana Arts Commission. She currently serves as Education Director and the Lubeznik Center for the Arts in Michigan City, Indiana.

In the spirit of Bourgois, let me introduce myself. I'm a suburban white woman with a background in history. I was assigned to read this book for an "Aspects of Deviance" Sociology class. Bourgois' approach to his research makes a lot of sense to me since I was taught (as a would-be historian) to take into account all backgrounds and prejudices of the author, the reader, and the characters (if applicable). Perhaps something that makes the read so easy is that the author so willingly points out his own thoughts and biases. This is not to say that our job as readers becomes only to sit back and enjoy the story, but it makes it easier to filter through the author's analyses in order to modify the conclusion for yourself. Importantly, he liberally uses transcriptions of actual dialogues with the East Harlem crack dealers whom he befriends over three-plus years. Having that kind of access to the source of his research is invaluable in judging the situation for yourself.
As for the content, I can think of no better way for me to get a glimpse into that kind of life and neighborhood. One of the only other books that comes close is an autobiography by Nathan McCall called Makes Me Wanna Holler. This book covers his experience going from a gang member in the 1970's to "goin' legit" as a journalist and often revisiting the demons of his past.
Because the author discusses the idea of objectivity and various definitions of it, I want to mention one movie for anyone interested in better understanding how biases affect otherwise factual accounts. Courage Under Fire is a good example of understanding how various views, motives, and biases color different people's accounts. As much as we would like it, we can never practically obtain the kind of completely unbiased, third-person view of a situation as we are given at the end of the movie, but, with practice, you can come close. This is not to say that you should be completely detached from what you read or see, but that you don't have to get bogged down in the views of others.

So compelling. So inspiring. So poignant. I'm so glad I read this book! How beautifully Bourgois is able to convey the issues of poor, inner-city members who give into temptation in order to do what they feel necessary for sufficient income and for basic human dignity. Few books have been able to articulate these arguments with such grace. Highly recommended to those who wish to better understand their brothers and sisters with whom it can otherwise be a challenge to relate!

This is like an anthropologists memoire. If I had known that I might not have started reading. Boy and I glad I did. It is a fascinating account of Puerto Ricans in NY city in the crack epidemic, their lives, their culture and their sorrows.

Not an introductory cell bio lab manual

I am teaching an undergraduate cell biology course, and I was quite disappointed to find that some of the experiments require acutely toxic chemicals (such as sodium azide). Some of the experiments use quite technical language. I would not recommend to use for introductory cell biology courses; however, there are not many lab manual options out there. If you're a teacher, I would recommend only using some of the protocols and intermixing it with other labs in other lab manuals. This is a lab manual that would be used in graduate-level classes or research labs.
