"SUZANNE W. DIETRICH" is an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. Her current research focuses on the application of active, declarative and object-oriented database technology to designing event-based enterprise applications by integrating distributed components using rules. Dr. Dietrich's research has been supported by grants from the National Science Foundation, including the investigation of active rule processing and the development of novel approaches to undergraduate database education. She has numerous publications and is the author of "Understanding Relational Database Query Languages" (Prentice Hall 2001).

"SUSAN D. URBAN" is a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Arizona State University. Her research interests include object-oriented data modeling as well as event, rule, and transaction processing for enterprise application integration. About the Author
Beattie was a struggling single parent of two children and freelance author and journalist cranking out stories for a small-town daily newspaper in 1986 when she came up with a book idea. She wanted to write a book about what happens to people when they love someone who is addicted to alcohol and other drugs."There were many books out there about how to help an addict or alcoholic. Nobody was talking about how an addict impacts the lives of the people around him or her, and how crazy you can become when you love someone who is addicted," Beattie said. "Even though I was sober, I didn't know how crazy I could get until it happened to me." Twenty publishers turned down Beattie's book proposal. "It's a good idea, but we don't think there's that many codependents out there," they wrote back.Hazelden, however, a treatment center and recovery publisher based in Minnesota, saw a need for the book. The publisher understood how families of alcoholics suffer and believed Beattie's book idea would help people. Beattie marched to the welfare department, asked for enough financial help to make it through the three months it would take her to write the book, then locked herself in a basement office and cranked out Codependent No More. She relocated from Minnesota to California, and she has long-since paid back the welfare department. Playing It By Heart is Beattie's first original book for Hazelden since 1990; the book is a return to her recovery roots that first brought her national recognition.

A life changer

I know this is an incredibly cheesy thing to say, but this book changed my life. It is a simplistic yet thorough look at this disorder. Its roots, its patterns, and, most importantly, its solutions. Like many who have probably read this book, I found myself being told I was co-dependent in therapy and not understanding what exactly that meant. Beattie even touches on that vagueness in this book, admits that codependency is not well-defined. Reading this defined it for me. It clarified exactly what it was and made me understand where it came from and how to solve it. This book was where my recovery began.

I will say this: this book is somewhat about God. If you are like me, you don't care where solutions come from as long as they work. I am a Christian so for me the tone and frequent mentions of God were not really of note, but if you are sensitive to such things just know it is a part of this book although I wouldn't say it is overbearing. You can easily enjoy this and take away plenty of help without being a religious or spiritual person.

Wow.

I've struggled with this unknowingly for as long as I can remember. In the midst of going through the hardest thing I've ever faced; the willing letting go of the person I love more then any other human being, this has been an eye opener. Overcoming the death of a parent was tough. Overcoming addiction was seemingly impossible. They but prepared me for the insanity I just survived. I found solace and strength in my actions and this book was a pillar and beacon of hope. It is beautifully written from experience in an easy to understand language; the kind you can still read as your eyes are blurred by tears as they strike home.

Thank you. This book has helped me immensely in the arduous first steps of continued recovery, acceptance, and forgiveness of self.

If you need it, it will help you

After growing up with an alcoholic and (what I thought was) a narcissist, I have been carrying a ton of weight on my back. I started reading this book on Friday night after writing the Samaritans for help with suicidal thoughts. I feel like the last day and a half has brought me more peace and contentment than the years of depression/anxiety medications ever did (just my personal experience - not everyone will feel this way.) It's still "fresh" and I still need to try taking this new approach to work next week, but I FINALLY understand why I've been how I've been and that it doesn't have to be that way. Even if you're not in a relationship with an addict, this book can help you. If you're anxious, depressed, feel stuck, feel like nobody likes you, whatever - there is something to be gained from this book.

I needed this book for school. Shows all the abbreviations for what will be found on blue prints. Only problem I had was there was no answer key in the book so there was no way for me to double check my work before class. There's a lot to learn from the book.

About the Author

John J. Macionis was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

John Macionis' publications are wide-ranging, focusing on community life in the United States, interpersonal intimacy in families, effective teaching, humor, new information technology, and the importance of global education.

In addition, John Macionis and Nijole V. Benokraitis have edited the best-selling anthology Seeing Ourselves: Classic, Contemporary, and Cross-Cultural Readings in Sociology. Macionis and Vincent Parrillo have written the leading urban studies text, Cities and Urban Life (Pearson). Macionis’ most recent textbook is Social Problems (Pearson).

John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he has taught for almost thirty years. During that time, he has chaired the Sociology Department, directed the college’s multidisciplinary program in humane studies, presided over the campus senate and the college’s faculty, and taught sociology to thousands of students.

In 2002, the American Sociological Association presented Macionis with the Award for Distinguished Contributions to Teaching, citing his innovative use of global material as well as the introduction of new teaching technology in his textbooks.

Professor Macionis has been active in academic programs in other countries, having traveled to some fifty nations. He writes, “I am an ambitious traveler, eager to learn and, through the texts, to share much of what I discover with students, many of whom know little about the rest of the world. For me, traveling and writing are all dimensions of teaching. First, and foremost, I am a teacher–a passion for teaching animates everything I do.”

At Kenyon, Macionis teaches a number of courses, but his favorite class is Introduction to Sociology, which he offers every semester. He enjoys extensive contact with students and invites everyone enrolled in each of his classes to enjoy a home-cooked meal.

The Macionis family–John, Amy, and children McLean and Whitney–live on a farm in rural Ohio. In his free time, Macionis enjoys tennis, swimming, hiking, and playing oldies rock-and-roll (he recently released his first CD). Macionis is as an environmental activist in the Lake George region of New York’s Adirondack Mountains, working with a number of organizations, including the Lake George Land Conservancy, where he serves as president of the board of trustees.

From an instructor's perspective

I have to use this book to teach Sociology 101, and it frustrates me to no end. The book is a failure in every aspect.

Introductory textbooks have to simplify things, of course, but Macionis oversimplifies to the point where my students feel that their intelligence has been insulted, and worst of all, don't realize that the sociological concepts he's talking about are more than simple stereotypes and platitudes. He writes at one point, essentially, that "white people don't understand poverty", while every college freshmen knows that poor whites do exist, and that the author must be either a racist or an idiot for thinking otherwise. But what does the cultural construct of race have to do with social hierarchy and economics? Macionis doesn't start that conversation, you'll have to do it yourself.

And that's the general flaw of the book, Macionis writes chapter after chapter of superficial lists of concepts, theorists, and vocabulary, but never does the real work of laying out key sociological theories in a simple and thorough way, which of course is exactly what a textbook is for. As a teacher, I'm then forced to spend class time laying out the basics that Macionis didn't cover, everything from culture to symbolic interactionism. He'll give a few paragraphs to Weber, Marx, or Freud, but doesn't actually explain them in any coherent way.

Some things are completely absent. Macionis doesn't mention some key concepts, like social capital, and doesn't explain at all how sociologists use statistics. With glaring omissions like those, it's obvious that Macionis simply doesn't understand sociology.

Finally, the book just isn't organized in any worthwhile way. Macionis puts the three big "approaches" (StrucFunc, Conflict, Interaction) in the first chapter, before the students have been exposed to enough material to understand why they're useful or important. Then the rest of the book is a laundry list of concepts, clumped into chapters without any real theme. For example, chapter 4 is about social interaction, status, role, emotion, and humor, but gender, class, race, social groups, and social stratification are spread out in other chapters. Sure, the students learn their vocabulary, but it becomes very difficult to connect the different concepts to each other.

Macionis offers snippets of narrative to help explain the concepts, but nothing big enough for actual analysis, so you'll have to do it instead. All in all, this book does nothing that it's supposed to do, and should not be bought by anyone.

Almost Too Good to Be True

The book, that is. The stories and pictures are just unbelievably warm and beautiful. I often read this short book cover to cover during Chanukah--one sparkling little gem a night. Just perfect for adults and, I'm sure, children, too. In fact, I can't imagine anything nicer than to read these to a kid on Chanukah. This book is the perfect gift, to yourself or anyone else. And if you can find yourself a hardcover copy, then you're *really* in luck.

Wonderful!

I really enjoyed this book. This book has eight stories, one for each night of Hanukkah. All the stories were interesting and had beautiful illustrations. My favorite story was The Power of Light. Isacc Bashevis Singer is a Nobel Prize Winner. This is a great book.

About the Author
Merrie Bergmann received her Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Toronto and is currently an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department at Smith College. She has published articles in formal semantics and logic, philosophy of language, and computational linguistics.

James Moor received his Ph.D. in history and philosophy of science from Indiana University and is currently a Professor of Philosophy at Dartmouth College. He has developed software for teaching logic and has published articles in philosophy of science, philosophy of mind, logic, philosophy of artificial intelligence, and computer ethics.

Jack Nelson received his Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Chicago and is currently Associate Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences and the Interim Chair of the Philosophy Department at Arizona State University. He has developed software for teaching logic and has published articles in personal identity, epistemology, and philosophy of science.

Ideal for self-study

I must first give a huge thanks to the authors of this textbook (The Logic Book 5e) for writing such an elite introductory logic book. Now, there are two groups of persons whom will read this book. The first group consists of those who are required by their respective college through college coursework. The second group consists of those who are not required but nevertheless are interested in the subject. I belong in the second group. After declaring my major to be in mathematics, my degree plan required me to take an introductory proof course were the required textbook was "Mathematical proof: A transition to advanced mathematics" by Chartrand. The book just mentioned covers sentential and predicate logic in a mere 20 pages and somehow expected its audience to be expert proofers. I immediately ran to the library to seek for additional help in logic and ended up with the following textbooks at hand, "Introduction to logic" by Suppes, "Introduction to logic" by Copi, "Introduction to logic" Gensler, "Logic and Philosophy: A modern introduction" by Hausman, and "The Logic Book" by Bergmann. Out of the bunch, this textbook (The Logic Book 5e) drew my attention the most because its definitions were the most clear and every chapter had an outline summary. It also drew my attention because it covers metalogic, a topic not covered by the others. It took me about twelve hours to complete each of the chapter's exercises at a rate of 4 hours per day for a total of (12*11)= 132 hours of study time in 132/4 = 33 Days. Thus it took me 33 days to complete the entire book (11 Chapters). This book (the Logic Book) taught me how to convert an English argument into symbolic predicate form and from predicate form back to English. But the most important thing that the textbook taught me was to become an expert proofer in sentential and predicate logic, a skill require in mathematics(ZFC Axiomatic Set theory to be more explicit). I highly recommend this textbook to anyone interested in learning how to proof arguments from a given set of assumptions. There is now no excuse for a person not to know logic, especially when this textbook exists. Consider buying a used 5th edition to save money. Good luck on your Journey!

I Bought a 4th edition copy of this same text for my sister and cost me less than $5.00 including S&H (See The Logic Book (4th Edition)). Futhermore, the 4th edition is 99.99% identical to the 5th and 6th editions and yet 99.99% cheaper. Now, it doesn't take a person to know much math nor much logic to know that the 4th edition is a heck of a better deal. The same table of contents of The Logic Book (4th Edition) applies to both the 5th and 6th editions. You're welcome!

Not a Classic for No Reason

It is unfortunate that Mr. Morriss had such difficulty with his logic course, especially since he is both a philosophy student and has been able to maintain a respectable GPA. As any student of philosophy knows, however, any one of a number of things could have brought about the 'D' on the midterm for the unfortunate fifty percent of his fellow students.
My experience with this text and (perhaps, therefore) with my undergraduate logic class in general was considerably more enjoyable than Mr. Morriss's experience. Certainly my professor was very good at presenting the material, but presumably he was not making up for a poorly written book. For, when I needed to consult the text, I found it actually to be quite clear and helpful.
Turning to the book itself, since I am not a fan of truth trees, when I have the opportunity to teach my own logic course, I will utilize proofs. I have viewed many undergraduate logic texts, and the proof method presented in this text seems the clearest.
Furthermore, as my logic professor told me and his professor told him: Logic is not in the head; it's in the fingers. Therefore, I think that the considerable amount of exercises contained in this text is greatly beneficial.
Third, definitions of terms and important points are presented clearly in text boxes throughout the book. Students will benefit greatly by committing these terms and points to memory.
Finally, although the price is prohibitive (hence, four stars), Bergmann, Moor, and Nelson's text has withstood the test of time. (In fact, the 4th edition is supposed to be out this summer.) Such evidence is not conclusive, but it suggests that perhaps lying behind Mr. Morriss's frustration is a cause more complex than merely this classic text.

Good logic book

I used this for my sophomore level logic course, as the previous reviewer. I do agree that trees get large, but I think tree is the right method for showing some statements are consistent, equivalent etc.
This book spends too many words (and examples) on the trivial issues and it is sometimes difficult to find the key points. I am very quick to get bored with trivial examples and tend to stop reading before I get all important points.
This book poorly utilizes graphics. I wish the book summarized key points using simple tables or lists. Perhaps you like to make your own graphic summary as you read (I did).
I give four stars because the coverage is good but not five because of the reasons I said above.
