A Critical Intervention that Focuses on the Emergence of Modern Surveillance through Anti-Black Racism in Canada and USA

Simone Browne’s Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness is a fascinating interdisciplinary book that provides a critical intervention into the field of surveillance studies by bringing it into conversation with a diverse set of disciplines, including Black feminist thought, critical race theory, sociology, geography, criminology, and cultural studies. Throughout Dark Matters, Browne advances the carefully constructed argument that contemporary surveillance practices and technologies emerge from historical and contemporary conditions of anti-black racism in the United States and Canada. Browne skillfully critiques the under-theorization of race within surveillance studies without ever suggesting an outright dismissal, rather she shows readers how such a limitation can be addressed by providing an overview of developments in American surveillance practices and procedures as informed by historical and ongoing anti-black racism similar to a genealogy. To reveal the manner in which anti-blackness has informed modern surveillance, Browne delves into what she refers to as the archives of the Atlantic Slave Trade and its Aftermath beginning with the Door of No Return, a figurative and literal door leading to ships intended to transport enslaved bodies to American and British colonies. From there, Dark Matters deftly moves across a number of sites and spaces over different time periods, including Brooks (1789), the plantation, the streets of New York City, eBay.com, and airport terminals and planes.

To better explain certain racialized surveillance practices, policies, and technologies, Browne introduces some very interesting theoretical concepts throughout the book that I found helpful. For example, dark sousveillance, Browne explains, is a praxis that allows readers to critically engage with surveillance technologies implemented during slavery that persist today. Racial baggage is another critical concept that bears relevance across different academic disciplines and, further, holds the potential to be used in everyday discussion. According to Browne, racial baggage refers to the burden resulting from the discrimination at the airports against certain travelers who look or act a certain way. These are just two of the many concepts I found useful. More generally speaking, I found the author’s perspective and voice to be innovative, unconventional, and lively.

Perhaps one of Browne’s more significant and engaging decisions was to include lengthy and in-depth analysis of various responses to racialized surveillance. The entire book demonstrates a powerful command of hegemonic state surveillance practices, still I have to emphasize how much I appreciate her examination of resistance and response strategies. The significance, to my mind, is the recognition that while state surveillance is hegemonic, it’s not totalizing or infallible –there are opportunities to subvert racist surveillance. By acknowledging opportunities to subvert or respond to these systems, Browne points to possibility for change. Responses, as Browne shows, occur in small and large gestures, in/actions, conversations, and productions. For example, on ships transporting the enslaved, the layout organized people by presumed sex. According to Brown, even in these unimaginably restrictive spaces, she points to ways queer people could take advantage of the heteronormativity of the ship plans. Elsewhere, Browne provides reveals how the enslaved could undermine legal and social constructions of race in order to escape. For example, some people used their fair skin or ability to read as escape strategies. I was absolutely tickled by Browne’s creative selection of artistic responses that include an episode of South Park, a Twitter hashtag initiated by Solange Knowles, Mendi + Keith Obadike’s Blackness for Sale (2001), and Hank Willis Thomas’ Priceless #1 (2004). On a final note, when Browne took up a discussion of Desi Cryer and Wanda Zamen’s HP Computers are Racist (2009) Youtube video, I couldn’t help but think about other people mention how poorly Snapchat captures darker complexions than it does white faces.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading Dark Matters from start to finish. As an Indigenous feminist studies scholar working outside the field of surveillance studies, I was surprised to find myself completely engrossed by this book and gaining insights relevant to my own research projects. More specifically, I was intrigued by Browne’s discussion on the manner in which the Atlantic Slave Trade and its Afterlife contributed to the development and consolidation of Canada and the United States, two white settler societies. In addition to boasting fascinating analysis and content, I was particularly struck by the way Browne structured the overall book and chapters. I appreciated that her literature review in the introduction carefully outlined salient discussions, themes, arguments, and insights of surveillance studies in conversation with scholars focused on Blackness and critical race. Each chapter follows a fairly consistent format that begins with historical context and analysis, contemporary surveillance practices, and responses/resistances to anti-black surveillance policies and practices. Overall, I believe Simone Browne’s Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness provides a significant contribution to surveillance studies among many other fields! Read it!

Exposing Dark Matter

This book provides new eyes to a subject that is rarely discussed. Well, it is most often discussed as we talk about the internet and what happens to private data from our lives and business. However, as with most things in the United States, there is a dark side most often suspiciously addressed to the dark people in our midst. Yes, I'm talking about history, the beginning of the country and slavery. In the United States, the Africans were always watched: Are the blacks doing what they are suppose to be doing? Are the blacks where they are suppose to be? To know all this requires deputizing everybody, most often whites, but also the non-white Africans and native Americans, in the service of this agenda. I learned a lot. From lantern laws to passports, so very much in our everyday life goes back to the need to know where the Blacks are and what they are doing. Now that all are enslaved via credit, the surveillance state has evolved and intensified so gradually -- like a simmering pot that boils. Thank you for giving us new insights into the "how" and the "why" of our present surveillance state.Through the Lens of the Transatlantic Slave Trade

A Disruption, Analysis, Conversation, and Invitation

Simone Browne’s “Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness”, is a beautifully written disruption, analysis, conversation, and invitation. Browne carefully moves through archive of the transatlantic slave trade and its afterlife to provide a critical and necessary intervention into surveillance studies.

I came to this book with little background on surveillance studies, but Browne generously provided a clear and engaging overview of the major principles and scholars of this study. In this book, Browne identifies a gap that exists in the discipline: dark matters. Dark matters is about understanding how race has historically, and continuously, structured surveillance practices. Browne approaches this work through a racialized and critical lens, arguing that when Blackness enters the framework of surveillance, it troubles how this discipline has been, and continues to be, theorized. As she describes it, “Drawing a black line”, Browne uses Black feminist scholarship to re-interpret and complicate surveillance studies. Moreover, Browne considers dark sousveillance as the ways that surveillance is resisted, challenged, and responded to. Browne’s focus on sousveillance sheds light on how surveillance practices are subverted and refused. From escaping enslavement to contemporary art pieces, Black people continue to talk back to a surveillance state. To me, this is what Black Twitter aptly calls a “clapback”.

What I found especially refreshing about this book was how Browne clearly, but thoughtfully, approached concepts. This is a book for the academic and non-academic alike. She works with highly theoretical concepts and speaks to academic work, but situates it in historical references, contemporary examples, stories, and anecdotes. Current examples of how Black bodies exist under state-sanctioned surveillance are historicized and contextualized. Browne’s use of clear language is wonderfully accessible, which can be hard to find in academic work. Additionally, the use of tweets, media, literature, and art allows this piece to be relatable. As a Black woman, I saw myself and my experiences reflected in the text. Simultaneously, my understanding of surveillance as a mechanism of social and political control grew. Each chapter explores surveillance through different spaces and time. From the internet to airports, from the Book of Negroes to current census data collection, Browne shows how surveillance is enacted differently on different bodies. For example, the specificity of how Black women are subjected to hyper-surveillance.

“Dark Matters: On the Surveillance of Blackness” provides new ways to understand and engage with surveillance studies. Browne approaches rich content with care, disseminating and communicating it so that it is accessible to a wide range of audiences. I recommend this book for people interested in surveillance, the transatlantic slave trade and its afterlife, black epistemologies, and stories of disruption and resistance. As I mentioned in my opening line, this book is a disruption, analysis, conversation, and invitation. Brown disrupts surveillance studies, bringing Blackness into the framework. She analyzes archive to draw out how surveillance practices can be understood in slavery and its afterlife. She brings this analysis into conversation with current racialized surveillance techniques. All the while, she invites us to consider methods of interruption, of responding, of dark sousveillance – of clapping back.

My Favorite Takeaways

First, just think, there are about 180 pages dedicated to designing web forms.
That's crazy! Forms are often overlooked or given very little attention in the
overall design, yet they are typically the most vital element in any web page or
app.

This book covers everything you need to know to build the most effective forms
that correctly capture the user information you require. If you create forms of
any kind, read this book. I know you will learn something.

Here are a few of my favorite takeaways:

* To instill trust, place a noticeable link to your privacy policy near forms
that require identifiable information. Also, provide an explanation of why
you're asking for such info either adjacent to the form or the form field.

* Three rules to influence response rates:

1. Establish trust

- make it easy to contact someone if the user needs help
- the form and required fields must have clear purpose
- must be professionally designed
- keep advertising away from the form
- 100% functional; no defects or typographical errors

2. Reduce social costs

- provide progress indicators
- keep forms short and easy
- minimize requests for sensitive or personal info
- design questions that users can answer
- user error messages that respect the effort the user is making
- preserve user's info to reduce double entry in case of a mistake

3. Increase rewards

- clearly explain or outline the benefits of properly completing a form

* Create personas to assist in form design decisions. Have people not directly
involved in the form design help you create "stories" of people who will
likely complete your forms.

* Form field defaults should favor the user. For example, uncheck the email
subscription checkbox; it's probably borderline spam anyway.

* If you ask for information from the physical world, tell or show the user
exactly where to find it. For example, if a product serial number is required,
show a picture indicating the location of the serial number on the actual
product.

* Turn negative questions into positive ones. Do not use double negatives,
negative words, or negative phrasing because they make questions harder to
understand. For example, "Is the information we have wrong?" should be written
as "Is the information we have correct?"

Required reading for designers and marketers

As a marketing consultant who has embraced web usability in the last 2 years, I've been on a UX reading tear, having read probably over 20 books from the likes of Nielsen, Krug, Redish and others. I refer back to Forms That Work more than any of them.

Web forms are such an underappreciated part of the user experience. Almost every site has at least one, it often has as much impact on conversion rates and customer satisfaction as any part of the site, and it typically has major usability problems. But it usually gets a fraction of the attention that flashy features and functionality get.

When designers and marketers do focus on it, they have trouble reaching consensus on the best UX -- more so than with other areas in my experience. Marketers often see forms as a primarily about capturing data for analysis and for follow-up emails, leading them to ask for far too much info. Meanwhile designers often try to spice up this boring area by breaking conventions, leading to confusion and frustration.

Forms That Work offers the perfect antidote to this situation. The authors have many years of experience watching users interact with all types of forms, and they present their research and advice in highly practical ways. The book is well-written and well-structured, so is easy to read in sequence the first time or two. But for me its biggest value is as a reference source. Every couple weeks, I face a question around forms -- from progress bars to error messages to secondary buttons. Whatever it is, I always find it in the Forms That Work index, and within minutes I'm on much stronger ground.

Some aspects of forms have changed since the book came out a few years ago. But the vast majority has stayed the same, as has human behavior. Forms That Work will be highly relevant for years to come. It should be required reading for designers, developers, marketers, and anyone else who might influence a web form.

Great book with valuable insight, statistics, data, and UCD reasoning.

I think Jessica Enders' review really captures the essentials but I'll add a few of my thoughts.

I bought this book at the same time I purchased Luke Wroblewski's Web Form Design: Filling in the Blanks. His book is great but the limitations are there in the title. Luke W. has a great knowledge of design from the Web onwards. Many people forget that forms have been around much longer than the web and that UX design itself has decades of history predating the web. I can't say how clear it is to me that so many of the popular web-gurus out there don't know their roots.

Well, Carline Jarrett has been dealing with form usability since paper was the only way to go. The breadth of her knowledge lends itself to a much deeper understanding and offers far more insight into how users work with forms than any other book I've read. It's clear she has the expertise that someone who has only ever worked with web forms is lacking and as another reviewer put it this book is, "[the] missing chapters on forms from every other design book you've read." Forms That Work teaches you how to think about form usability from the ground up where Luke W's book reads more like a best practices compendium.

I'm also a huge advocate of accessibility and Forms That Work offers important information about keeping and making forms usable by everyone, another aspect that's missing from the other books out there.

The differences in metaphysical status between creator and creatures raise questions for which Mann suggests answers. How can God know contingent facts and necessary truths without depending on them? Why is it so easy to overlook God's presence? Why would self-sufficient God create anything? Wouldn't a perfect God create the best world possible? Can God be free? Can we be free if God's power is continuously necessary to sustain us in existence? If God does sustain us, is God an accomplice whenever we sin?

Mann responds to the Euthyphro dilemma by arguing for a kind of divine command metaethical theory, whose normative content lays emphasis on love. Given the metaphysical differences between us, how can there be loving relationships between God and creatures? Mann responds by examining the notions of piety and hope.

About the Author

William E. Mann received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Minnesota. Having previously taught at St. Olaf College and Illinois State University, he has been a professor in the University of Vermont's Department of Philosophy since 1974, retiring as Marsh Professor of Intellectual and Moral Philosophy in 2010. He has published extensively in the philosophy of religion-especially philosophical theology-and in medieval philosophy.

About the Author

Dr. Mike Peng Li was the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) with Wavecrest. He is now a Principle Architecture/Distinguished Engineer with Altera. Dr. Li pioneered the jitter separation method (Tailfit); deterministic jitter (DJ), random jitter (RJ), and total jitter (TJ) concept and theory formation; and the jitter transfer function (JTF) concept, theory, and application for high-speed serial link analysis. He has set and contributed to standards for jitter, noise, and signal integrity for leading serial data communications, such as Fibre Channel, Gigabit Ethernet, Serial ATA, PCI Express, FB DIMM, and International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS). He has been the cochairman of the PCI Express jitter standard committee. Dr. Li has been involved in technical committees for IEEE- and IEC-sponsored technical conferences, such as International Test Conference (ITC) and DesignCon. He is a frequent speaker, invited author/speaker, panelist, and session and panel chair on the subjects of jitter/noise and signal integrity, covering both design and testing. He has received many awards, including a design paper award from DesignCon/IEC and a contribution award from PCI-SIG. He has been listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in the World since 2006.

            Dr. Li has more than 15 years of experience in high-speed-related measurement instrumentation, testing, and analysis/modeling algorithms and tools, with applications in IC, microprocessor, clock, serial data communications for electrical and optical, and wireless communication. He has a BS in physics from the University of Science and Technology in China and an MSE in electrical engineering and a PhD in physics from the University of Alabama in Huntsville. He did his post-doctorate work at the University of California, Berkeley, where he worked as a research scientist on high-energy astrophysics before he joined industry. Dr Li has published more than 80 papers in refereed technical journals and conferences. He has filed 12 patents, with four granted and eight pending. He was the executive editor for Design and Test for Multiple Gbps Communication Devices and Systems and wrote two contributing chapters on jitter, signal integrity, and high-speed I/O design and testing for two books.

not up to the hype

The jitter area was really needing some new books and altough this book should be added to the library of any engineer working on jitter (there are not that many) it does fall short from what the author promisses. He does present a good initial discussion on the different types of jitter but the presented mathematical framework (mainly based on linear system theory) is very dry (sometimes of no use apart from some formalism) and provides little help to the engineer doing real work. More important the author basically presents mainly presents his work and forgets a significant large amount of published work from other people (for a first book on jitter in several years the reference sections are very very poor). The Signal Integrity aspect the book is extremly poor and the loopback testing section is useless (again forgeting a lot of industry work already available).

Unbelievable also is no in dept discussion on the jitter details of any standards (PCI expres, etc...) altough the author was part of some those comittes. The arguments presented against the BER Q based jitter separation algortithm are strange (he states that since an erfc() function is not part of the C++ standard library it is not easy to write the code !!! There are several free implementations of the erfc() function available) for good and bad this is the algorithm on the PCI Express II standard and just because he is not the inventor of the algorithm we engineers need to use it and a fair and wider discussion was needed.

The text does contain some errors and for a book that has so many equations the author should have used a word processor that could make the text/equations more easy to read (e.g. latex) and not MS word.

But at the moment there is not to much in the jitter area in book form. So if you have the time to spend on it go ahead.

In this book, Mike Li offers an experienced perspective of the role jitter and signal integrity play in modern high-speed communication. While incorporating his own contributions to the modeling and testing of jitter in systems, his book provides a broader basis of understanding to the student seeking to build a foundation on the complexities of signal integrity at high-speeds.

The material of this book is a significant departure from other texts that discuss high-speed signal integrity. It focuses on the fundamentals of how different phenomena lead to different source of jitter and ISI and how we, as system designers, can untangle these problems. The text seeks to clearly distinguish different definitions of jitter and how these variously used terms are interrelated. Most importantly, the flow of the book helps demonstrate how jitter propagates through the system and helps analyze jitter in different system blocks.

This an important and exciting are at the heart of future high-speed electrical and optical and this is one of the first books that deciphering the challenges facing engineers in maintaining communication reliability.
