About the Author
Daniel Fletcher is a native Texan who lived and trained in Japan from 2001-2008. He studied Budo (combat), Shurikenjutsu (throwing weapons), Kyudo (samurai archery), Satsuma Biwa (the samurai lute) and Horimono (traditional Japanese tattooing).

OUSTANDING BOOK, GREAT INTRODUCTION TO SHURIKENJUTSU

There is basically no one in America who has the experience in shurikenjutsu that Danny Fletcher has, this book is a must buy. As someone who owns basically every book on shurikenjutsu ever written I can say this is one of two English language books worth buying, the other being Shuriken-do by Shirakami Ikkuken. The author is an expert on Japanese martial arts and culture with experiences no other authors who have tried to cash in on the hype of the shuriken can come close to. Danny has not only trained in the Bujinkan and learned the shurikenjutsu of Togakure ryu, which is covered greatly in this book, but has gained the knowledge of the use of a huge variety of shuriken from other ryu-ha through his study with Otsuka sensei of the Meifu Shinkage Ryu, one of the few extant shurikenjutsu ryu. This book will teach you the use of basically all forms of shuriken from senban, to jujiken, to bo shuriken and even the use of obscure items like the matsubagata of iga ryu. Also covered is the use of shuriken in shokenjutsu (use of shuriken as a handheld weapon in close combat), as well as sword forms with shuriken. You will be able to study the basic kata of Meifu Shinage Ryu, and hopefully seek out a dojo to train this art and understand its higher level teachings. This book is a must have for ANYONE who is interested in REAL NINJUTSU and REAL SHURIKENJUTSU.

A comprehensive textbook for Shuriken jutsu, a must-have!

As a long time student of Shuriken jutsu, I can honestly say that Daniel Fletcher's book is the most accurate and comprehensive work on the subject that I have seen. He takes you through not only the basics, but also the more advanced throws in a way that makes them very accessible to everyone from the first timer to the experienced martial artist. His explanations and demonstrations show the real combat aspects of Shuriken jutsu that most people never get to see... it's not just trying to hit a target, there's a lot more to it.
The DVD was a totally unexpected surprise. It's one thing to see martial arts books showing still pictures and word descriptions of techniques (even really good books like this one), it's another all together to be able to see these different things in action. The DVD is easily worth 3 times the price of the book alone; This book is WAY under priced.
Not only do you get to see the Author expertly demonstrating the techniques and concepts, but you also get to see Otsuka sensei, current Grand master of the Meifu Shinkage ryu Shuriken jutsu school throwing different types of blades.
One thing missing from the book is mention that there is now a branch of the Meifu Shinkage ryu in America. It's located in California at www(dot)california-msr(dot)com.

If you have even a passing interest in pointy things from Japan, this book is an absolute must-have. I have made it mandatory reading for all of my Shuriken jutsu students... it makes my job a lot easier.

About the Author
HUSAIN HAQQANI was Pakistan s ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011. A sorry tale but true

Haqqani, former Pakistani Ambassador to the United States and currently persona non grata (extremely non grata) from his homeland, denounced as a traitor and accused of betraying the Pakistani military in favor of the United States, has no illusions about who runs his native land and who benefits from it. While "Magnificent Delusions" may seem over the top in places the more one reads about and studies South Asia the more one realizes that his book is very much on the money.

Haqqani writes that Pakistan has had an inflated view of its importance on the world stage since 1947 and expects the United States to fund and arm it. At the same time U.S. intelligence and political leaders refused to see that the Pakistani military was created, trained and deployed for war with India particularly to force the return of Kashmir to Pakistan. They continued to tell themselves that Pakistan was part of a bulwark against the USSR. In reality the Pakistani enemies list started and stopped with India although there were always belligerent noises toward Israel. The pro forma pronouncements against the Soviets in Afghanistan were mainly to keep the flow of funds moving from Washington. In recent years, their erstwhile proxies (Pakistan Taliban, al Qaeda, etc.) have turned their guns on the Pakistani state itself.

While the sorry tale of the huge increase in U.S. military aid to Pakistan after soviet invasion of Afghanistan doesn't need retelling, one unintended consequence was increasing funds for the development of an "Islamic bomb" in Pakistan. The Saudis contributed billions to fight the Taliban and al Qaeda operations while the United States matched much of it. There was so much money sloshing around with essentially no oversight or control from the donors it was easy to surreptitiously transfer hundreds of millions of dollars to the nuclear program.

Dr. Haqqani's current effort.

I usually do not write reviews of the books but I think this book made me concerned enough to write one. Dr. Haqqani has written a “well researched” book that actually is quite a venomous opinion piece about Pakistan. The research that he did for this book, was basically to build up a case, about, how successive governments in Pakistan lied and cheated the world specially United States for their own purposes. This is like a 7 years old brat who is asking for guns from his parents and grandparents and all of them are naive and nice enough to give in to his demands. According to Dr. Haqqani’s argument, the kid is on fault as he should have known better.
By writing this book, Dr. Haqqani is trying to make a moral argument about the immorality of Pakistan. It is a difficult mantle to carry on by someone who started his political career as the president of student wing of Jamait-e-Islami (Muslim hardliners with extremist wings in Afghanistan and Kashmir). Later he saw the “light” and became the supporter of Zia-ul-Haq (Army dictator) and later his protégé Nawaz Sharif. During Nawaz’s first term, Dr. Haqqani became the ambassador to Sri Lanka. When Nawaz’s government was toppled and Benazir Bhutto came into power, Dr. Haqqani again saw the “light” and efficiently switched boats to join her government. Later he was ambassador to US until Supreme Court of Pakistan charged him with treason, because of a memo that he wrote to Admiral Mike Mullan to intervene in Pakistan while offering him numerous rewards from Govt. of Pakistan. It is quite ironic that he did the same thing for which he is criticizing his country in the current book. After reading the book, I was just surprised that how someone with such a hatred towards their parent country can represent her in this difficult world. Pakistan Supreme Court answered that question slightly by saying in their judicial report that “Hussain Haqqani was not loyal to Pakistan”.
There may be other books that can give you a more neutral picture of Pakistan. On the other hand if you want to get a hateful opinion from one of the “insiders’ then this book is for you. Looking at Mr. Haqqani’s life as an opportunistic individual, my guess is that, as he cannot go back to Pakistan because of pending legal charges, Dr. Haqqani has seen the “light” again (probably 5th time in his life) and is trying to pant himself as an antiestablishment and anti-Pakistan person to get some invitations from news channels (FOX etc) as an “expert”.

Important case study in international relations

A fundamental requirement of effective foreign policy is cultural competency: The ability to communicate in a way that meaning is not distorted when messages are translated across worldviews and political contexts. When communications are not assessed within the contexts from which they emerge, confusion can result. When one or both sides hears what they want to hear, however, it is not confusion, but delusion that results. As an advisor to two Prime Ministers and Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States from 2008 to 2011, Husain Haqqani saw first hand the dysfunction that can seep into international relations when one or both sides bases their foreign policy in delusion.

Husain Haqqani's first-hand experience in US-Pakistan relations notwithstanding, "Magnificent Delusions" is not a memoir, but a case study. Haqqani begins his examination of US-Pakistan relations before Pakistan's independence in 1947, and details a history of both sides hearing what they wanted to hear while ignoring the global and domestic political contexts in which events were unfolding.

Neither is the book a polemic against the US or Pakistan. From Secretary of State Dulles overlooking the eerily prescient observations of Ambassador Langley in the late 1950s to Pakistan's misunderstanding of the limits of US obligations in bilateral security agreements, Haqqani details a history in which both countries have developed foreign policy around a set of wishful assumptions rather than contextual analysis.

"Magnificent Delusions" serves as a point of reorientation for US-Pakistan relations, but it also provides an important case study to guide the development of other relationships as well.

The Alchemyst (2007), the first book in The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel series,  introduced a wide-ranging group of historical figures who have achieved immortality and are engaged in a present-day struggle for the fate of the world. This second entry picks up exactly where the first left off. Allied with the legendary Nicholas Flamel  on the “good” side are teenage twins Sophie and Josh, who are supremely gifted but with powers that are untrained. Countering them is a new archvillain, Niccolò Machiavelli, who, along with other figures from history and legend (Joan of Arc, a trio of Valkyries), swells the already impressive cast. Plundering every imaginable culture of their heroes and heroines is a clever feat, sure to draw all manner of historically and mythologically minded readers. One weakness starts to show through, however. In a six-book series such as this, each installment begins to feel like a lengthy, glorified chapter rather than its own book complete with a satisfying story arc and resolution. That said, this keeps the pace as an exciting and impeccably thought-out fantasy, well suited for those left in the lurch by Harry Potter’s recent exeunt. Grades 7-10. --Ian Chipman

The real heir to the Harry Potter books

I happened upon this and the first book in the series (The Alchemyst) just before July 4th and have quickly polished them off. For me the use of real historical characters alongside well-researched mythology is nigh irresistible.

The books move along smartly with plenty of action and a narrative that is propulsive and unrelenting. In many ways these feel more like Jim Butcher's Dresden Files books than Harry Potter.

Note that these books are clearly written to be "safe" for a younger audience. No sex, and fairly restrained violence. These are exciting and tense books, but still PG (or maybe barely PG-13).

I am intrigued by the ambiguity around several of the main characters including Machiavelli and Flamel and am eager to see where these books go. Highly recommended.
