The Long Shadow of Chernobyl (English, German and French Edition), by Gerd Ludwig

Opening with an essay by Mikhail Gorbachev, the last head of state of the Soviet Union, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990, this is a deeply personal journey into a landscape forever changed.

National Geographic photographer Gerd Ludwig, made nine visits to Chernobyl over a period of 20 years; this is his powerful record of an environmental and human tragedy. Through the perspective of the victims living with the emotional and physical aftermath, to the Exclusion Zone created by a massive evacuation (more than 350,000 people by the year 2000), to the abandoned neighboring city of Pripyat, once a scientist's dream in terms of quality of life yet now uninhabitable, it is a record of almost unbelievable suffering and desolation.

Working under enormous time and radiation pressure, Ludwig ventures deeper into the belly of the beast than any other photographer, repeatedly documenting the destroyed reactor No.4, which will disappear under a New Safe Confinement for at least 100 years.

This book does not always make for easy viewing. It is however, an emotive, thought-provoking and necessary testament to one of the twentieth century's worst nuclear disasters. Using documents that until recently have been classified, from the CIA, U.S Government Foreign Press Monitoring, Department of Energy, Department of Defense, GAO and United States Congress of the disaster, it becomes an even more important voice in the continuing political, environmental and economic arguments around the safety of using nuclear energy, particularly in light of the Fukushima disaster in Japan twenty-five years later.

Review
There are no words for the devastation caused by Chernobyl. Thank God we still have dedicated photojournalists to say it for us with their pictures. It takes the courage of a Gerd Ludwig who continually puts himself in harms way to keep the truth alive. (Annie Stein Huffington Post, April 2, 2014)

Gerd Ludwig documents the worst nuclear disaster in history with sobering but stunning images. (John Vidal The Guardian, July 4th, 2014)

Ludwig's book stands out as a case study in the challenges of photo book publishing. (David Walker Photo District News, February 18th, 2015)

Finally, a thorough photographic document of Chernobyl
By aphotocollector
As a passionate photo book collector and history junkie, I find this book to be one of the most impressive of my countless purchases in recent memory. I own several other photo books on Chernobyl, and know many photographers have covered this subject, but none match the shear scope and quality of Gerd Ludwig's 20 year retrospective masterpiece.

Mr. Ludwig's powerful photographs of the devastating consequences of the meltdown are as informative as they are artful, and as heart wrenching, as they are jaw-dropping. While the images of the ghost town and the exclusion zone are haunting, the images of the victims and elderly residents in the zone show the human side of the tragedy with such honesty and empathy. His photos from deep inside the reactor are like no other - especially the image of the frozen clock inside the reactor - what a shot! I get the feeling that he lives and breathes this subject, and has taken a lot of risks, both emotionally and physically over the last 20 years.

The printing and layout of the book are equally impressive. First off, hold it with two hands - the book is large, thick, and wow is it heavy! At 250 pages, with a hard cover, and a sturdy slipcase, this is a true art object. The paper is a fine satin finish, and the beautifully printed color images really pop off the page. As soon as I picked up the book, I could tell that this is a quality European style photo book - not some cheap flimsy thing printed in China without any input by the author.

There is also a lot of research and information in the book. The essay by Mikhail Gorbachev brought the entire disaster into a new light for me, as I had never considered the political consequences. The introduction by Gerd helps to explain the nuances of the story and give you a feeling for what it was like for him to shoot in the zone, plus the detailed captions give further context to each photograph. Bravo for giving the readers intelligent background information!

Also of note, is the cover of the book itself. Inside the slipcase, with his famous photograph of the workers wearing gas masks inside the reactor, is a very simple cover, showing the Soviet's press announcement of the disaster as it was happening. It is a chilling warning to the images that come. The following quotes from the book, Voices From Chernobyl, add to this feeling as well. That book by the way, is also a must-read (I had tears reading many of the first hand accounts of the disaster).

Altogether, I'm thoroughly honored to have this book in my collection. I'm glad I took the extra time to track Mr. Ludwig down and buy a signed copy too, totally worth the few extra bucks and it certainly adds value to me. I can't wait to catch an exhibition of this work someday!

The book itself is well made and the attention to color and detail is beautiful. The binding is strong
By devlin gandy
I've been following Gerd's work for a long time and am truly impressed with this, his latest book. From the introduction essay by Gorbachev to his most recent work at Chernobyl, stunning photos lead you through a roller coaster of history and emotion that continues on to today.

The book itself is well made and the attention to color and detail is beautiful. The binding is strong, with heavy paper stock, its a solid book.

Overall, it's one of those truly rare and stunning books that captures not just a moment or a singular story, but a collective history we can't bear to forget.

THESE PHOTOGRAPHS SIMPLY MUST BE WITNESSED
By Kenneth E. MacWilliams
The photographs in this book simply must be witnessed. They strike you just as a powerful blow to your gut might, or a stunning blow to your brain. They will empty your lungs and figuratively split your scull. When Oppenheimer witnessed the first nuclear explosion he remarked that it brought to mind the words from the Bhagavad Gita "Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds." These photographs lift the mask on that dark side in a way never before seen. And even at that, as Mikhail Gorbachev writes in the introduction, "One could now imagine much more clearly what might happen if a nuclear bomb exploded. According to scientific experts, one SS-18 rocket could contain a hundred Chernobyls."

The Skimm Reads calls it "a thriller that's part True Detective, part The Girl On the Train. All parts gripping."

Husbands and wives. Mothers and daughters. The past and the future.

Secrets bind them. And secrets can destroy them.

The author of Pretty Girls returns with an electrifying, emotionally complex thriller that plunges its fascinating protagonist into the darkest depths of a mystery that just might destroy him.

With the discovery of a murder at an abandoned construction site, Will Trent of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is brought in on a case that becomes much more dangerous when the dead man is identified as an ex-cop.

Studying the body, Sara Linton—the GBI’s newest medical examiner and Will’s lover—realizes that the extensive blood loss didn't belong to the corpse. Sure enough, bloody footprints leading away from the scene indicate there is another victim—a woman—who has vanished . . . and who will die soon if she isn’t found.

Will is already compromised, because the site belongs to the city’s most popular citizen: a wealthy, powerful, and politically connected athlete protected by the world’s most expensive lawyers—a man who’s already gotten away with rape, despite Will’s exhaustive efforts to put him away.

But the worst is yet to come. Evidence soon links Will’s troubled past to the case . . . and the consequences will tear through his life with the force of a tornado, wreaking havoc for Will and everyone around him, including his colleagues, family, friends—and even the suspects he pursues.

Relentlessly suspenseful and furiously paced, peopled with conflicted, fallible characters who leap from the page, The Kept Woman is a seamless blend of twisty police procedural and ingenious psychological thriller -- a searing, unforgettable novel of love, loss, and redemption.

Not what I wanted to read about.
By Lynn McLean
I have always really liked Karin Slaughter's books. I especially like the Will Trent series.I would not enjoy a series centered on Angie. More than half of this book is devoted to Angie, a thoroughly unsympathetic central character for a book,. We got to read about who she talked to, who she met. what just crazy, selfish thoughts she has, how her car was running. I kept fast forwarding hoping we'd get back to the characters I thought the book would be about, Will and Sara, Amanda and Faith, and their lives. I also think Slaughter has pretty much wrung all she can out of Will's sad past and I would enjoy more story lines about his present day and his life with Sara. These are great characters and maybe there could be a more interest centered on their present day lives and challenges given that they have such interesting lives and occupations. Everybody moves on sooner or later, especially if they are happy. I was very disappointed that the ending seems to portend yet more of the same. I would be careful when the next Trent book is released to make sure it's mostly about the characters I want to read about. before I buy.

A story that was a long time coming....
By texasreader-stacy
I have been reading the Grant County/Will Trent series since the start. And Karin Slaughter is one of my top 3 mystery/thriller series. So it pains me to score this book lower than a 5. LIked it YES, really liked it NO. No because I didn't get what I personally wanted from the book, not that it's a bad book or that the story isn't an amazing suspense/thriller. It's just, for me, I was a bit disappointed.

This story was a long time coming. We have all been wanting some kind of resolution with the Sara/Will/Angie storyline. Honestly, we have all wanted Angie to go away and never come back. And it looked like we might have gotten that, for a split second. But this book is really about Angie's backstory. Who she is, why she does what she does. She is a horrible person, and she can't let Will go so he can be happy with Sara. She continually pokes at their lives, reminding them that she is like a cockroach that will never go away.

The story that Angie's story is threaded thru is nothing special. Basketball greats acting like spoiled, men who think they can get away with using and abusing women. Blah, blah, blah. It is just a platform to pull all the players together.

I won't spoil the real identity of the players, you get to put that puzzle together yourself. And it is a true Karin Slaughter puzzle. I almost had to get a whiteboard out to follow the bloodline and trail of identities and relationships. That, I will give 5 stars, because that is what Slaughter is great at. Building the suspense of the ultimate puzzle. And it's a brilliant puzzle, surprises around every corner.

My problem is I usually get resolution, and I didn't get that. Not the resolution that I wanted anyway. And maybe it will come in the next book (i hope so). I believe that Will and Sara deserve to have something after all the pain and loss they have had in their lives.

Not a stand alone book, great addition to the series.
By Jennifer MM
If you have followed the Will Trent series from the beginning, especially if you have followed the series since Sarah and her first husband you will enjoy this newest addition. If you are new to the series you will struggle with not only the storyline, but Will Trent in particular - you may not even like Will in this book...this would be so unfair as he is a great character.
This book focuses a lot on the back story of Will and Angie (Will's wife), issues that have come up between Angie and Sarah (Will's girlfriend), and Angie's past with the department. The past is all tied together with the current case that the department is currently working on, with Angie right smack in the middle of. It is really hard to explain without giving spoilers.
Slaughter does what she normally does and gives great character development and a fantastic story that builds on her previous books. I honestly don't feel this is a stand alone book because there is so much rich history about characters that we have come to love (or hate) and to not have that going into this book, well I could see were you would just dislike all the characters.
I do wish for a more permanent ending with Angie. I am really sick of her having her claws in Will. I believe Slaughter wants to try to get us to like her in some small way like she did Lena in previous books, but I was never a fan of Lena's either.

From Publishers Weekly
Oseland, who has lived in Singapore for 20 years, hopes to help people who haven't had the benefit of a trip to West Sumatra or Kuala Lumpur to discover those places' scents and tastes. Oseland devotes close to half the book to explaining ingredients, techniques and eating traditions as well as relating anecdotes from 20 years of roaming the islands and picking up the natives' cooking wisdom. Many ingredients will require special trips to ethnic markets, though Oseland allows for some substitution or omission of difficult-to-find items like fresh galangal or daun salam leaves. The first chapter covers sambals, every meal's essential spicy accompaniment, as well as other small dishes like the fiery Sweet-Sour Cucumber and Carrot Pickle with Turmeric; he follows with slightly more familiar street foods and snacks such as satays and gado-gado, then rice and noodles in all their guises, from simple, heavenly steamed rice to the zingy Malaysian Penang-Style Stir-Fried Kuey Teow Noodles. Oseland's instructions are detailed, and he makes a convincing case that with a little time and care, the best of these complex, interrelated cuisines can be enjoyed thousands of miles from their origin. Excellent Book
By T. Bojko
I've owned this book since 2007 or so and cooked most of the recipes in it. Do not be put off by the reviews that complain there aren't enough photos -- go online if you want a picture or just figure it out yourself.

While these recipes are generally easy to follow it will take some time to get the balance right in many of them. This is home cooking at its best, which means you have to get a feel for it.

Not all recipes are great -- chicken rendang is tough to keep moist. But then there's the nyonya pork and the beef rendang. Absolutely incredible and surprisingly easy. The chapter on vegetables is also a revelation...

Passion for the palate
By Chad
I'm a chef and have been fortunate to travel somewhat extensively to the three countries whose cuisines are covered in this book, particularly Indonesia. I love this book. I'm actually relocating to Malaysia soon, and this book will go with me. It's great as a cookbook, but its true delight is found in the prose that accompanies the recipes, recounting the author's experiences in SE Asia, discussing hints for shopping at an Asian market, selecting the best spices, etc. I've had many of the dishes in the book, from satays in Bali to Padang-style food in Jakarta to the wonderful gudeg and ayam bubur in Yogyakarta to a fantastic fusion of Chinese, Malay, and Indian street food in Kuala Lumpur, to the comfort-food appeal of Nyonya cooking in small, family-run restaurants in Melaka (Malacca) to the fantastic crossroads of cuisine found in Singapore (indeed, about the only things to really do in Singapore are shop and eat).

It's been said that food is the most apparent uniter of any culture, and that once everything else has been watered down or weaned away completely (think of Greek or Italian immigrants who have come to America), the last cultural identifier that remains is the food. It's so true, and this book absolutely takes you on a cultural and culinary journey. The author's passion for food and for the people of these fascinating countries practically leaps off the pages. The wonder of Indo-Malay cuisine is indeed the best-kept secret in Asia. Any sizeable city in America is likely to be overrun with Chinese and Thai restaurants. Vietnamese food is plentiful, and you can usually find Korean or Japanese food without much difficulty. But try to find an Indonesian restaurant, or a Malaysian restaurant serving up Nyonya chicken. If you do find one at all, it's likely to disappoint if you've ever spent any time in these countries. This book is the cure for what ails you.

Any cookbook will offer a list of ingredients, preparation instructions (in varying degrees of clarity and depth), and occasional notes on the dish itself. This book utterly transcends the basic offering. Virtually every recipe is replete with anecdotes, personal observations, and a truly in-depth guide to making the dish spectactular. I do wish there were more color photos, the few that are included aren't really sufficient, but the quality of the recipes and the fantastic depth of the writing more than makes up for it.

Highly, highly recommended.

great intro to Indonesian cooking
By LizB
I've cooked many recipes from this cookbook, and it's been great. The food is delicious, and the instructions are clear. The recipes have been adjusted to take into account the availability of ingredients for American kitchens, but except for that, the recipes seem true to the authentic flavors.

Sometimes the cooking instructions have been oversimplified and dumbed-down too much (as in frying potatoes one piece at a time, for example), and that's my only criticism of the book. But for a beginning cook, or a cook intimidated by or unfamiliar with Asian cuisines, the detailed play-by-play instructions may be a plus.

I bought my book from Amazon after browsing the Cradle of Flavor online message board (Egullet forums). A group of people have cooked every recipe in the book and posted numerous photos and comments.

Overall I recommend this book as an excellent introduction to Indonesian cooking.

Catalyst, by Laurie Halse Anderson

Meet Kate Malone-straight A science and math geek, minister's daughter, ace long-distance runner, girlfriend, unwilling family caretaker, emotional avoidance champion. Kate manages her life by organizing it, as logically as the periodic table. She can handle it all-or so she thinks. Then, like a string of chemical reactions, everything happens: the Malones' neighbors get burned out of their home and move in. Because her father is a Good Man of God (and a Not Very Thoughtful Parent), Kate has to share her room with her nemesis, Teri Litch, and Teri's adorable, troublemaking little brother. And through it all, she's still waiting to hear from the only college she has applied to: MIT. Kate's life is less and less under control-and then, something happens that blows it all apart, and forces her to examine her life, self, and heart for the first time. Set in the same community as the remarkable Speak, Catalyst is a novel that will make you think, laugh, cry, and rejoice-sometimes at the same time.

Amazon.com Review
Chemistry honors student and cross-country runner Kate Malone is driven. Daughter of a father who is a reverend first and a parent second ("Rev. Dad [Version 4.7] is a faulty operating system, incompatible with my software.") and a dead mother she tries not to remember, Kate has one goal: To escape them both by gaining entrance to her own holy temple, MIT. Eschewing sleep, she runs endlessly every night waiting for the sacred college acceptance letter. Then two disasters occur: Sullen classmate Teri and her younger brother, Mikey, take over Kate's room when their own house burns down, and a too-thin letter comes from MIT, signifying denial. And so the experiment begins. Can crude Teri and sweet Mikey, combined with the rejection letter, form the catalyst that will shake Kate out of her selfish tunnel vision and force her to deal with the suppressed pain of her mom's death? "If I could run all the time, life would be fine. As long as I keep moving, I'm in control." But for Kate, it's time to stop running and face the feelings she's spent her whole life racing away from.

Catalyst, Laurie Halse Anderson's third novel for teens, is a deftly fashioned character study of a seldom explored subject in YA fiction: the type-A adolescent. Teens will identify (if not exactly sympathize) with prickly Kate instantly, and be shocked or perhaps secretly pleased to discover that life is no easier for the honor roll student than it is for the outcast. Anderson earns an A plus for this revealing and realistic take on life, death, and GPAs. (Ages 12 and older) --Jennifer Hubert

From Publishers Weekly
Like its cross-country-running heroine, Anderson's (Speak) latest novel starts off promisingly, then loses its pacing about midway through. The narrator, 18-year-old Kate Malone, has placed all of her eggs in one basket: she has applied only to her late mother's alma mater, MIT. Calculus is a cinch, chemistry is her favorite subject, even physics comes easily to her, but when her MIT rejection arrives, it acts as catalyst for the slow unraveling of her delicately balanced life. A preacher's daughter, she struggles between "Good Kate" and "Bad Kate" as she singlehandedly keeps the household running (her mother died nine years ago). Anderson excels in conveying Kate's anxieties and her concomitant insomnia, and frequently intersperses evidence of Kate's sharp humor (she calls Mitchell A. Pangborn III "my friend, my enemy, my lust"). But Kate's relationships with others remain hazy. While this seems to reflect Kate's state of mind, since she slowly shuts everyone out as her MIT-less fate becomes clear, her detachment may create a similar effect for readers. This aloofness becomes most problematic in the dynamics of her relationship with Teri Litch, who once beat her up habitually. After Teri's house burns down, she and toddler Mikey Litch come to live with the Malones, and the action escalates to the point of melodrama. Yet another tragic event spurs a reconciliation between Kate and Teri, but the underlying changes in the individuals that lead up to this event remain unclear. Teens will take to Kate instantly, but as the novel continues, they may be confused about what makes her tick. Still, the universal obstacles she faces and the realistic outcome will likely hold readers' attention. Ages 12-up.

From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up-Kate Malone is a high school senior, an AP chemistry student, and a runner. She does her best running at night, when she outruns ghosts and can soar in the comfort of anonymity. Since her mother's death, she has taken care of her father (a minister) and her brother. She is waiting for acceptance to MIT, her mother's alma mater, and feels that her very life depends on it. Teri Litch, a typical school bully, punches her way through most situations and is filled with rage that threatens to affect everyone she encounters. When her house partially burns down, she and her little brother, Mikey, are invited by the reverend to move temporarily into his home. Teri's world is imposed upon Kate's as they become locked in some type of cataclysmic mix that alters both of their lives. Eventually readers discover that some of Teri's anger comes from being raped by her father and, when Mikey dies in a tragic accident, they learn that he was really her son. Anderson uses great chemical titles and subtitles for the short chapters. However, there is too much happening too fast and readers are left with many unanswered questions, and an ending that seems neat but unlikely. This title has a good premise and some moments of fine writing, but it lacks the depth of characterization that made Speak (Farrar, 1999) so compelling.

Different from what I usually read... but very good.
By A Customer
I really enjoyed reading this book. It dealt with a lot of issues that many books just don't cover, and it was refreshing to read something different from fantasy for a change (I'm a big fantasy fan). It was also interesting to think about what the title means. To different people, Kate's catalyst was caused by different things... college, Teri, Mikey... it's up to you to decide just what was the turning point in Kate's life and what was the cause.
The plot follows an 18-year-old straight A chemist named Kate. Her father is a preacher, which makes the story interesting, because Kate is an active aetheist. She runs at night, irons clothes, cleans her brother's room, anything to get herself out of bed. This causes many of her friends (mainly Mitch, her boyfriend) to worry, but she explains that she can't sleep. Kate is trying to get into MIT, the college that her mother went to, and didn't apply to any 'safety' schools, so if she doesn't make it to MIT she's not going to college. The story also follows Teri Litch, Kate's neighbor, though Kate is still the main character.
Catalyst will keep you guessing. It's not a boring, predictable book, and I was surprised so many times in this book that it's not even worth it to write them down. Though the plot was unpredictable, the book still flowed extremely well. Happiness, confusion, loss, anger, grief, and unconditional love were all wrapped up inside, and I can assure you that this book is definately worth reading. :)

Richie's Picks: CATALYST
By N. S.
... ...
But, getting back to Laurie Halse Anderson and to Merryweather High, the setting for SPEAK, and now for CATALYST... What? Yes, indeed, Laurie returns us to the land of the infamous Mr. Neck, and Hairwoman, and Andy the Beast--none of whom we get to see here. The story is set at the end of the school year following SPEAK, and Melinda, in another of Mr. Free-man's classes, does actually make a cameo appearance. So, knowing all of this ahead of time, you are possibly going to open this book and look for it to grab you by the throat and mystify you the way you were immediately mystified by Melinda Sorrentino's treatment on the bus and in the auditorium on her first day at the school.
Right?
Well, get over it! This is a whole different chemical equation:
Kate Malone, minister's daughter, star student, and runner, is a senior who lives for her acceptance letter to MIT--the only college she has bothered to apply to.
"Insomnia rocks, actually. You can get a lot done if you don't sleep. I've turned into a hyper-efficient windup Kate doll, super Kate, the über-Kate. I wish this had happened last year. It would have given me more time to study for my AP exams."
She introduces us to her family:
"Toby and I are the proton and neutron of our atomic family unit. Dad is the loosely bonded electron, negatively charged, zooming around us in his own little shell."
She introduces us to her group of friends:
"Sara slides her sunglasses across the table. I take off my glasses and put them on. The room mellows to a golden, SFP-protected glow...They are all out of focus now, but...I'd recognize these shapes anywhere. Sara Emery, my BF, is a self-described Wiccan Jewish poet. This would send most parents screaming to the therapist's office, but the Emerys are totally cool with it. I've been asking them to adopt me for years.
Travis Baird is to Sara as water is to fire: opposite and necessary. Trav is a freakazoid good guy with a taste for body art. The vice principal in charge of discipline has been aching to bust him for four years. He refuses to believe that good things can come in colorful packages.
A warm hand snakes around my waist. My knees buckle and the hand pulls me down into the very familiar lap of Mitchell A. Pangborn III--my friend, my enemy, my lust."
She introduces us to the story's outcast, a tough female named Teri Litch:
"The ugly girl, the one who smells funny, studies carpentry at vo-tech, stomps around with sawdust in her hair, and has fists like sledgehammers. Teri beat me up every year in elementary school, fall and spring. I turned the other cheek for a while, then I learned to run. Intelligent life pursues self-preservation."
And she introduces us to her "sad excuse of a motor vehicle, a Yugo named Burt."
But who or what is the catalyst here is one of the things you're going to have to read the book to find out.
...
CATALYST, which alternately had me crying and laughing, is a moving story that seeks to knock us off our little career tracks long enough to see what's really important.

VERY Useful Guide!
By Dave In Ohio
Being rather new to the SW DXing, I needed a guide. Most of them were pretty pricey so I decided to give this one a try.

When it arrived, I didn't have a lot of time to review it, just glanced at it and was a little upset. I had expected something with page after page of countries with their frequency listings, much like other guides I'd heard about. This one seemed to have a lot of articles about SWL and only in the back did I find frequency listings.

But the next day I had about an hour to sit and review the book on my Kindle and I discovered how clever Ms. Van Horn had been in her formatting. I realized that the last thing I needed was just a list of frequencies. The gem of the book is the section that divides the day into UTC hours and what frequency in which country is likely to be on the air at that time. After all, what good does it do me to know that Radio Slobovia broadcasts on 1305 if I have no idea of when to listen for them? ( The book also contains a long listing by frequency for identifying those broadcasts that you stumble upon.)

I've looked around the articles towards the beginning of the book and the ones I've read are well written and interesting.

I strongly recommend that the new readers of Ms. Van Horn's guide use the table of contents to skip around and become familiar with the format.

Very useful book at a good price. Ms. Van Horn has herself a new fan :)

Essential reference for SWLs
By Hundedrek
Gayle knows international SW like few others. She used to write a monthly column and directory in the late, lamented Monitoring Times mag. A big reason why I I subbed to it for years. This guide continues the tradition. The Kindle version is more convenient to use. Now that so many international broadcasters are streaming their programming, Gayle's guide is even more valuable.
