Expensive but very good.

The articles that make up this selection are very good. Elizabeth Asmis' article about the concept of fortune in Seneca and David Wray's about Senecan tragedy are SO good. The articles from Bran Inwood and Christopher Gill are the only ones to have been published elsewhere before.

The only bad thing about this book is its price. I am very happy to have bought it, don't regret it whatsoever and I loved reading the book. I've read so much about Seneca already, and almost all of his works, but some articles in this book do bring some very fresh interpretations to scene.

Nonetheless, you might want to think twice before buying it, because it's expensive. Buying it or not should depend, I think, on how much this book might help you in your studies. That might or not make it worth it.

También han tenido notable éxito el resto de sus libros de cuentos y novelas, algunos han obtenido numerosos premios internacionales. Además tiene varios libros de poesía, género que cultiva sistemáticamente.
Vive en La Habana, donde se dedica a escribir y a pintar.

A powerful read- very enlightening details about Cuba

This book is a recount of Juan Pedro Gutierrez' personal experiences as a Cuban who was the victim of the crisis of 90's after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba's strongest ally and economic tie. This book may offend those who are fond of the Cuba that is portrayed as a paradise to many around the world but unfortunately the lifestyle of Cubans is not at all what the tourists enjoy. Also, some may be offended by the way the author portrayed is own life as an average poor Cuban male, who survived the best way he could by living a vagabond life with the company of the rum bottle, sexual encounters and salsa music. What else could a poor destitute Cuban do in a communist country whose government provides its people with the bear minimum and even less at times.
I think book just tells it like it is without any polishing which I think gives the reader a clear portrait and reveals another aspect of Cuba with respect to survival especially during the peak crisis of the 90's when the shortage of everything was notable. The basic staple needs like soap, toilet paper, food etc. could not be met and the situation is still quite comparable today in 2003. The book brings the Cuban experience to life via the language that the author uses which is at times very vulgar, raw, inappropriate and downright Cuban however, the language and the style is what brings his recounts to life and helps to situate the reader in that time frame and to identify with the author's experiences. Also, there are some interesting references to the Gods of Santeria a religion that is still practiced by many Cubans today.
Overall the book presents and aspect about Cuba that is real, hard to believe and depressing but at the same time is an eye opener and a reality check about a country who has its citizens living in poverty and in some cases below human standards.
I read the Spanish version. I believe a book like this should always be read in its original form. The language here I don't think can be carried over successfully in a translation.

Raw, crude, unnerving but funny and poetic at the same time

Great read, I wouldn't know how to start describing it, I just know that I liked it. His prose is full of sex, misery, rum, hunger and dirt, with the constant presence of women and the ocean. A desperate cry into the hopelessness of those who lived in Cuba during the early "Special Period" of the nineties.
The story of a renegade cuban journalist, and an insight into his own hell and that of those around him; a hell caused by the starvation and misery that followed the breakdown of the Soviet Block in Cuba. Sex, drugs and cheap rum provided the only distraction available at the time. A narrative where the hunger never leaves, and where the only thing that is for sure is that things will not be better tomorrow.

Pedro Juan, de profesión periodista, empleo actual buscavidas con vocación de contemplador estático de la realidad circundante y superviviente de la crisis de los 90, vive en una azotea-cuartería, con hambre, sin ilusiones ni esperanzas en un futuro mejor entregado a la promiscuidad sexual desenfrenada, al alcohol y al contrabando para poder malamente subsistir el día a día, marcado por la miseria mas absoluta, rodeado de jineteras (prostitutas) a las que no le daba reparo sacarle el dinero, juntándose con traficantes de drogas, bisneros (vendedores) para sacar unos pesos para comer, rodeado de ruinas y de la fauna humana que forma el microcosmos mas pobre de La Habana donde por unos dólares la gente no duda en degradarse física o moralmente, un lugar donde el sol todos los días le recuerda que sale para iluminarle el camino a la supervivencia les guste o no.
Una recopilación de relatos autobiográficos contados en primera persona enmarcados en la etapa más sórdida y decadente de la Revolución Cubana en los años 90, con un realismo crudo, sucio y explicito, usando un lenguaje sencillo, directo sin ambiguedades ni dobles sentidos nos describe escenas de sexo explicito, lujuria ligadas al alcohol, violencia y de falta de escrúpulos morales tales y como han sucedido sin matices ni colores, negro sobre blanco, sin sombras ni contrastes, como la vida misma. Un libro políticamente incorrecto pero delicioso.

Good basic training

The Sacrament of Reconciliation seems to be one of the less-attended to in seminary training. Rites of Initiation and Eucharist receive much more attention, which is rightly deserved. A Confessor's Handbook provides good training and assistance for seminarians wishing to learn more about this sacrament, as well as to continuing clergy looking to become better confessors.

The general approach can be summed up as, "Why is this person here?" "From what are they seeking to be freed?" The methodology is valid, as it addresses the pastoral needs of the situation; it is helpful, as it immediately cuts through the nice, but irrelevant conversations; and it's is simple, which makes is easy to implement and follow.

Also included in the back is a helpful bibliography of other books on the subject, for those who wish to do further reading.

Every seminarian and Priest should read and digest this wonderful work. It offers insights and suggestions for more meaningful administration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation [Penance] in a condensed, well-written format.

Often, Catholics avoid Confession out of fear. How sad this is, for it is in this Sacrament that the Mercy of God is so clearly manifested. Christ empowered His Priests to forgive sins in His Name. What an awesome responsibility. What an awesome Sacrament. It doesn't matter what one has done for the Divine Mercy of Our Lord is there ready to clear the soul of all that is sinful. Like an ocean of mercy, our sins drop into a sea from which they cannot be found any longer. Our sins may be numerous but if we are faithful to confess them all with true contrition and a firm purpose of amendment [a resolve not to commit them again], God is faithful to forgive them.

Now is the time for Mercy before Christ comes as the Just Judge. Now is the time before it is too late. If you know a Priest or seminarian, get him a copy of this book. It may be one of the best gifts he has ever received and you yourself one day hopefully can reap the benefits of this wonderful Sacrament. Don't put it off.

About the Author

Philip Durkin is Principal Etymologist of the Oxford English Dictionary. He trained as a medievalist and historian of the English language at the University of Oxford, where he completed a doctorate on previously unedited Middle English prose texts. He is a well-known speaker on English etymology. His publications include articles in scholarly journals, such as Transactions of the Philological Society, Dictionaries, and Critical Quarterly. He is Honorary Treasurer of the Philological Society, the oldest learned society in Great Britain for the study of language and languages

Excellent textbook

An excellent and comprehensive book. This book is for anyone who wants to know what etymology is all about, how it works and what problems it faces. If you ever browsed an etymological dictionary or looked at the brief etymologies in a regular dictionary and wondered, "How did they come up with this?", then you should read this book.

The writing is very accessible and readable. If only most other language scholars wrote like this.

The book really expects no prior knowledge, but it would help if the reader is familiar with the basics of grammar and knows a foreign language.

One of the best points of the book: it discredits the common misconception that etymology is about finding the "true" or "original" meaning of a word. There is no such thing, since language changes all the time, and always did so. For a reader who is not familiar with the history of the English language, it can be quite fascinating to see how dramatically it changed.

A fine orientation into the subject

A clear, rather formal presentation of the science of etymology, which is in many ways like archaeology or landscape history (only of words). The book's strength is its reasonably pain-free presentation of the latest research on the science's theoretical foundations. But any dryness is alleviated through plenty of fascinating (and often delightfully surprising) examples and case studies.

I suppose it may be a little heavyweight when compared to a number of recent books, which are basically just collections of curious word histories (e.g. The Etymologicon). But it shows more of the practical workings of the subject, and does better at helping make the most of the etymological entries in the larger dictionaries. It also fills a need for an accessible introductory guide to methods and practice for someone who wants to actively work in the field. This is especially important, because of all the linguistic sciences this one is the most open to amateur contributions and independent study.

Not a Dictionary

As a wordsmith, etymology has always been an important topic for me and I have often wondered "how do they know that". Durkin explains in rich detail just how he does it and as a general interest book I shall keep it by me. He writes very well, as one would expect, and the book has value on that account for anyone who wishes to express themselves well. Durkin uses many examples to illustrate the various processes and procedures in word research but this is not an etymological dictionary. It's more of a "How To" book.
